Grants and Contracts Manager, Office of Sponsored Research - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) is the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) and the only GUMC organization authorized to bind the Medical Center in sponsored research agreements. OSR is responsible for reviewing grant and contract applications for compliance with sponsor and University policies, in cooperation with other University administrative offices. 

The Grants and Contracts Manager negotiates and manages administration of extramural awards from government, foundations and industry, drafting and negotiating confidentiality agreements, research agreements, sub-award agreements and any necessary legal documents that might be required in connection with such awards. S/he acts as an official liaison with external organizations regarding sponsored research agreements and as a resource for OSR personnel on contract language review, sponsor conference calls and correspondence. Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Office of Sponsored Research, the Grants and Contracts Manager has duties that include but are not limited to:

Agreement Negotiation

  • Drafts, reviews, and negotiates agreements for sponsored research to ensure that the terms and conditions are in accordance with the University's policies and procedures, and that the University receives terms that are in its best interest.
  • Acts as an official liaison between the University and sponsoring agencies, provides guidance and problem-solving assistance when necessary, and initiates and concludes negotiations in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with other University stakeholders to ensure harmony in policies and agreements between Georgetown University and its Medstar clinical research partner.

Subcontract Oversight

  • Acts as a resource for OSR grants and contracts personnel on contract language review, sponsor conference calls, and correspondence.
  • Assists OSR Subcontract Specialists in identifying terms and conditions for outgoing sub agreements to other institutions.
  • Collaborates with peers in other University offices on legal and policy matters related to sponsored research.

Oversight of Budgetary and Closeout

  • Reviews and submits progress reports and other required documentation prepared by the Investigators to the sponsoring agencies, and assists the Investigators with project closeout activities.
  • Oversees the performance of administrative and budgeting tasks to ensure that awards are established in a timely fashion in the University's financial system, and assures the accurate entry of the award and budget information.

Collateral Responsibilities

  • Provides ad hoc reports to management and department administration. .
  • Assists in the development and implementation of research compliance programming.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree - preferably with a focus in Business Administration or Accounting
  • 3 to 5 years of grant and contract work experience
  • Excellent communication skills, an eye for detail, and the ability to work with a wide range of people with a customer service attitude
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Ability to work effectivity under pressure and manage intense demands of the external and internal clients
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point

Preferred qualifications

  • Certified Research Administrator or willingness to obtain this credential
  • Familiarity with financial databases, spreadsheets, federal grants, and contracts
