Principal Responsibilities: J Camps at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia provide fun and formative summer experiences for school-age children from grades K-10. Our vision is to create a safe space for campers and staff to learn and grow through building relationships with one another, engaging in meaningful programming, and embracing old and new camp traditions infused with Jewish culture. Through daily scheduling, field trips, special events, and leadership opportunities, campers from our youngest unit (Tzofim) to our oldest (Olim Bet) will look forward to augmented programming each year until they reach CIT-status, and ultimately join our J Camps staff team. Minimum Qualifications: POSITION OVERVIEW The Unit Leader will be responsible for the direct support and supervision of the general counselors in their unit. They provide support in all facets of the camp experience to the staff, so that the counselors can perform their jobs at the highest possible level. They are available to the staff members, campers and parents as a resource for all aspects of camp. General Responsibilities Be a Role Model for both staff and campers of how to represent Camp Achva and the JCC in a positive manner Uphold and support the mission and vision of Camp Achva and the JCC Follow and enforce all of Camp Achva and the JCCs policies Accept all other responsibilities as necessary Programming Responsibilities Attend pre-camp planning meetings with the Leadership Team Assist in the planning/organization/implementation of field trips, special events and other Camp Achva functions Assist in planning and participate in staff trainings Plan contingency plans for field trips and outdoor activities that may be cancelled due to weather Supervisory Responsibilities Engage and actively supervise all staff members in your unit Evaluate the staff members in your unit informally throughout the year and two times formally during the summer (mid-summer and end-of-summer) Set weekly meetings/check-ins with staff members in your unit Report any on-going staffing concerns to the Assistant Director Daily Responsibilities Record daily attendance and deliver to the Office Manager Ensure prompt arrival and dismissal of camp groups to/from activities Ensure counselors are engaged and actively supervising the campers Report any ongoing camper behavioral issues to the Assistant Director Collect Daily Report Forms from all groups in your unit Collect and handle any Boo-Boo Forms that may require immediate attention Communicate daily with Assistant Director as needed Record and communicate any significant events of the day to the Assistant Director Communicate effectively with the parents regarding any incidents/behavior issues/positive experiences of the campers day QUALIFICATIONS At least 21 years of age and/or have a bachelors degree Have 3-5+ years experience in working with children Knowledge of summer camp, including managing large groups of children and staff Sound judgement about what is appropriate vs inappropriate Experience managing multiple problems/situations at once Team player who is also able to work independently and manage their own schedule Commitment to working collaboratively with others Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing needs STATUS Member of J Camps Leadership Team Part time hours in June; approximately 5 hours per week from June 1 June 18 Full-time, Seasonal; Mondays through Fridays, June 19 August 17 Hours: 8am 4:30pm during the summer.
