HJF is seeking aP rosthetist/Orthotic Technician to support the Department of Rehabilitation and Department of Defense Osseointegration Program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to WRNMMC. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, itself, is one of the nation's largest and most renowned military treatment facilities and has recently been dubbed "The Nation's Medical Center". The Department of Rehabilitation is comprised of 4 clinical services: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Orthotics and Prosthetics. These services provide multidisciplinary rehabilitative care for servicemembers and retirees. The Department of Defense Osseointegration Program is a collaboration between Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and several other civilian medical centers and research organizations. The prosthetist technician will work as part of a team to assist with prosthetic and orthotic fabrication required as part of research projects aimed at advancing clinical research and guiding care of injured servicemembers and their families Responsibilities: Applies thorough knowledge and skill to fabricate state-of-the-art complex prosthetic and orthotic devices using cutting edge materials such as plastic resins, liquid polymers, titanium metals, and carbon fiber combined with electronic and automated components. Solicits feedback from prosthetic and orthotic practitioners for technique and material validation purposes. Applies thorough knowledge and skill using multiple fabrication instruments and test sockets/braces for developing the definitive prostheses and/or orthoses. Interprets requests for prosthetic and orthotic devices and plans their design and fabrication and refines existing methods and techniques. Has the ability to operate all shop machines and hand tools required to perform fabrication, alteration and repair of prosthetic and orthotic appliances. Plans fabrication by using plaster molds, models and/or computer assisted design equipment. Performs technical and complex fabrication, alteration, assembly, repair, and testing of prosthetic and orthotic devices for prosthetic and orthotic users. Assists the study team in collecting data for ongoing and future research protocols. Job Specifications: Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: High-energy individual with excellent problem solving skills. Ability to troubleshoot equipment errors and challenges and utilize machinery and hand tools to fabricate devices out of various materials. Possess strong written, verbal and briefing skills that focus on the ability to convey ideas. Excellent organization, sound judgment, flexibility and creative problem solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills that allow for working well with colleagues of different skill sets and backgrounds and with patients and research subjects. Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision and possess strong customer service focus. Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's Degree Minimum Experience: 2 years of experience serving as prosthetic and/or orthotic technician. Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of moderately heavy equipment Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: N/A Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: N/A Work Environment: The work environment is that of a prosthetic and orthotic clinic located in a teaching and research hospital. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet, and hearing and eye protection will be available for safety when utilizing certain equipment. Work is also performed in a clinic setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning. Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Director of Human Resources.
