These Administrative Technician positions provide administrative support in a variety of areas, and for projects and programs of varying size, scope, and complexity depending on the assignment.

The Police Department has one vacancy within the Special Operations Section (SOS) of the Operations Division. The primary roles and responsibilities of SOS is to safeguard life and property through the vigorous enforcement of vehicle and traffic laws, the facilitation of safe vehicle and pedestrian movement through and around the County, rapid response to traffic emergencies to mitigate community disruption, the coordination of special events and the professional intervention in public safety emergencies that require an elevated tactical police response. 

Duties for the vacancy in the Police Department may include:
  • Serve as the project manager for the Police Department's hand held parking system to include coordinating meetings between the Police Department, Arlington Treasurer's Office and contract vendor; maintenance of hand held parking device and familiarity with the Park Mobile system while working closely with the County Parking Manger and GIS team to verify the accuracy of parking meter types and locations.
  • Managing the SOS Aggressive Driving Program by marketing the program via website and community outreach at community meetings;
  • Maintaining the SOS traffic complaint and aggressive driving databases by corresponding with complainants via, in person walk-ins, phone, e-mail and other written correspondence;
  • Identifying vehicle owners using NCIC/VCIN and sending aggressive driving letters;
  • Assigning complaints for enforcement on a rotating schedule based on Department and Section priorities;
  • Compiling data and maintaining data bases of the assignment and location of specialized traffic enforcement equipment including signboards and traffic classifiers;
  • Coordinating funeral, dignitary and other motorcycle escorts; and
  • Researching, preparing responses, tracking, scanning and filing Section Board Grams.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum:

Administrative Technician I: High school diploma or the equivalent, plus two years of progressively responsible administrative support experience which includes at least one year of providing customer service to the public and internal customers; scheduling and coordination of work; applying a substantive body of knowledge of rules, procedures and/or operations to administrative assignments; and computer experience using Microsoft Office Suite and other similar software packages to produce correspondence, reports and statistical data.

Administrative Technician II (1 current vacancy): High school diploma or the equivalent, plus three years of progressively responsible administrative support experience which includes at least one year of extensive scheduling and coordination of work; providing customer service to public and internal customers; applying a substantive body of knowledge of rules, procedures and/or operations to administrative assignments; and computer experience using Microsoft Office Suite and other similar software packages to produce correspondence, reports and statistical data.

Bilingual: Some positions may require bilingual language abilities in Spanish and English.

Substitution: Satisfactory completion of two years (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) at an accredited college may be substituted for six months of experience. A bachelor's degree in related field may substitute for one year of experience. Education may not substitute for more than 18 months of experience.

Desirable:
  • Providing administrative support to multiple executive level staff;
  • Customer service experience that includes routing and tracking customer requests;
  • Using software or systems that manage vehicles, parking passes, or security access passes;
  • Bachelor's degree in field related to vacancy;
  • Experience with County Oracle/PRISM module for processing requisitions and iExpense transactions;
  • Experience using advanced Microsoft Office Suite functions with Word and Excel, in order to develop flyers, documents, and reports; and/or
  • Tracking time-sensitive projects.

 Special Requirements: Some positions will require travel around Arlington County for various meetings and field inspections. Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence.

An assessment of oral Spanish proficiency will be required before a candidate can be appointed to bilingual positions. The incumbent in the position will receive the language pay premium on all hours worked and on paid leave hours.

For positions within the Police Department: Successful pre-employment polygraph examination and Police background investigation are conditions of employment. These require a questionnaire (to be completed prior to the polygraph appointment), which is available on the Police Department website, under employment forms. A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. In addition, employees in the Police Department must take and pass the state mandated Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification and written examination within six months of hire.

The salary ranges for the Administrative Technician levels being filled are as follows:
  • Administrative Technician I: $38,625.60 - $59,030.40 Annually
  • Administrative Technician II (1 current vacancy): $42,307.20 - $64,646.40 Annually
