As Assistant Technical Director, Washington National Opera: coordinates load-ins, load-outs, and union crews on stage; completes and updates show archival information, including computerized drafting, photographs, and paperwork for each Opera.

Duties and Responsibilities:

35% For all WNO productions, coordinates computer drafting for new, borrowed, and rented shows; maintains technical liaison with designers and other opera companies for rental productions; assists in determining onstage objectives and needs for stagehands; oversee stagehands in assembly; arranges transportation of scenery, props, costumes, and all other production equipment to and from Kennedy Center, warehouse rehearsal facility and rental companies. Attends specified rehearsal and performances.

25% Manage WNO Driver, maintain storage plan for KC/WNO Warehouse, manage crews for construction projects within KC/WNO warehouse, Organize warehouse shop area and manage warehouse shop resources. Assist with set ups and other technical needs at the WNO Rehearsal Studios.

20% Documents productions with photographs from load-in through load-out, computer drafting, video recordings and other archival paperwork.

15% Using KCMaster: creates purchase orders for scenery and lighting; place orders and maintain good relationships with vendors; track all receipts and invoices; generate payrolls for scenic artists, Local 19 and Local 22 driver, as needed.

5% Other duties as assigned, including occasional Production Manager work for incoming KC Clients


  • A minimum of 3-5 years of opera or similar live performance experience

  • Bachelor's degree in technical theater is required; M.F.A. preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required

  • Thorough working knowledge of all areas of theatrical production and presentation

  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Office, Excel and Adobe Photoshop preferred. Proficiency in AutoCad required.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and management skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and to prioritize in a multi-task environment are required.

  • Ability to translate artistic and financial concerns of the Kennedy Center while ensuring the successful mounting of productions and presentations is necessary.
