Director of Alumni Relations

The George Mason University Alumni Relations is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a Director of Alumni Relations. Reporting to the A.V.P. for Alumni Relations, this senior leadership position works collaboratively with alumni program staff, university advancement and Foundation colleagues to develop and manage program and operational resources for the George Mason University Alumni Association (GMUAA) and the Office of Alumni Relations. This position will assess program effectiveness, cultivate a strong team of staff and volunteer leaders to support the strategic goals of GMUAA and Office Alumni Relations, and ensure strong mutually beneficial relationships with strategic partners. This position will perform the following duties: * Serve as a senior leader within the Office of Alumni Relations and act in the absence of the AVP. * Develop and manage resources for the GMUAA. This includes, but is not limited to the following: managing GMUAA philanthropic activities and campaigns, developing and managing affinity partnerships, securing sponsorships, building a value-added alumni benefits program, and oversee GMUAA budgets inclusive of tax preparation (IRS form 990) and reporting. * This position will serve as a staff liaison to the Alumni Association Board of Directors, attending and participating in full board and executive committee meetings. The Director will be the point of contact for the GMUAA treasurer to ensure that volunteer leaders are supported in the development and management of budget and are positioned for the future goals resources needs. * Manage alumni staff on boarding, alumni board member orientation, and Alumni Relations/GMUAA metrics and assessment. Work closely with Advancement Research to develop a pipeline for alumni recognition. * Identify, recruit and cultivate alumni for volunteer leadership roles, building an effective and engaged volunteer network in which alumni advance to increasing levels of involvement and leadership. This position will also manage volunteer prospect development. * Supervise full-time and student staff. * Work collaboratively with colleagues and volunteer leaders within the Office of Alumni Relations, the GMUAA, the Office of Annual Giving, the George Mason Foundation, Inc., Central and Unit Advancement and other university partners. * Other Duties as assigned by the A.V.P. in support of department, GMUAA and division priorities. Required Qualifications: * Masters degree or equivalent education and experience; * Proven leadership, organizational planning, high-level sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings; * Entrepreneurial spirit, positive attitude and energy to implement new strategies and meet ambitious goals; * Understanding of and experience with operations for Alumni Associations or non-profit membership organizations; * Experience in developing and managing resources, experience in recruiting, organizing, and motivating teams of volunteers, and the ability to identify and engage prospective volunteers for board committees and chapter leadership; * Ability to thrive in a diverse and fast-paced environment, possess strong analytical and independent decision making ability, and take initiative and ownership of projects, seeing them through with excellence; * Ability to manage multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among team members and balance multiple concurrent priorities; * Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as a leader, as well as a member of a team is important; * Superior writing, editing and speaking skills are essential; * Excellent computer skills including use of database systems; * Detailed-oriented with a mind for the broader picture and skilled at resolving issues as they arise; * Demonstrated ability with strategic thinking and creative problem-solving; * Vigorous work ethic, sound judgment, integrity, demonstrated initiative, and the utmost professionalism to work effectively with colleagues, stakeholders and strategic partners, and volunteer leaders; * Appreciation and understanding of the universitys need to foster, maintain and strengthen high-quality individual relationships with alumni; and * Must be flexible to work some evenings and weekends. Occasional travel is required Preferred Qualifications: * A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
