The Senior Director of Human Resources is a senior management position responsible for leadership, vision and strategic direction of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's human resources function. Partnering with the organization's leadership team, the Senior Director works to help the National Trust become a dynamic, 21st century workplace. S/he will work to empower a talented and diverse staff at all levels with the right tools and operating style to foster collaboration, creativity and results while supporting work/life balance and professional development. The Senior Director of Human Resources will play an important role in the organization's current implementation of a new strategic plan. S/he will help the organization transition to a matrix management environment where teams are cross-functional and geographically dispersed. The Senior Director will help assess and respond to needs for training and development for our workforce in skills such as project management, long-range planning, management of remote staff, and adjusting to unfamiliar tasks or methods. Duties: Direct all areas of human resources including recruitment and retention, compensation and benefits, training and continuous learning, succession planning and talent management, employee relations, EEO and affirmative action, and statutory and legal compliance with employment and benefits law. Ensure that all HR functions are administered consistent with best practices, quality service, and staff satisfaction. Work with organizational leadership to create and implement strategies that support the objectives of the organization. Partner with all levels of management to help them accomplish business objectives through appropriate HR-related measures. Evaluate and implement creative technology solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness of HR functions, including performance management/work planning tools, applicant/talent tracking systems, and employee/manager self service portals Advise, coach and counsel managers and staff to ensure consistent application and integration of policies, procedures and practices. Oversee the organization's performance management program to help ensure that organizational goals are achieved through enhanced staff performance, motivation, accountability and commitment to the National Trust's mission and values. Help create a continuous learning environment focused on on-going professional and skill development, with clear career paths for staff at all levels. Implement successful management development programs and look for opportunities to develop individuals within the organization to handle greater responsibilities. Evaluate needs for mentoring and coaching, especially with regard to leadership and supervisory skills for managers. Develop succession plans for key jobs and talent management programs to identify, build and diversify future leadership of the organization. In conjunction with the leadership team, help to define organizational values and a culture focused on delivering results and fostering an empowered workforce. Monitor the internal environment and develop approaches that ensure positive staff morale and a culture that values achievement and accountability. Apply critical thinking to help identify systemic barriers to organizational success and inspire solutions. Ensure an effective approach to employee relations including staff communication, transparency at all levels, employee engagement, conflict resolution, recognition programs and employee feedback programs. Ensure that diversity is a core value and strategy in all Human Resources functions, as well as throughout the organization. Maintain credibility with senior management and staff as someone who is a strong and collaborative leader and an expert in the HR function. The Senior Director must be seen as a strategic HR executive who can translate strategy into action. Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field and a minimum of 10 years of senior level responsibility for a full range of human resources functional areas, with a track record of creating and implementing strategic change, innovation and success. SPHR or graduate degree in related field is strongly desired. Leadership experience in a matrixed, geographically diverse organization is essential; nonprofit experience is a plus. Knowledge of organizational effectiveness strategies, leadership development, assessment methodologies, change management and performance management solutions, with demonstrated ability to provide strategic human resources leadership across the organization. Experience in evaluating, managing and using technology programs. Demonstrated computer proficiency including experience using MS Office applications and HR Information/Management Systems. Strong professional presence, with excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence others and create collaborative, productive working relationships, with demonstrated success in negotiation and facilitation. Ability to balance accountability with compassion when interacting with staff at all levels Excellent consulting, diagnostic and proactive problem solving skills, with ability to foresee and plan around obstacles to produce desired outcomes. Training, and experience training others, in project management methods a plus. Demonstrated experience building and engaging a culturally diverse workforce, as well as fostering an inclusive organizational environment; connections to, or experience networking with, diverse professional organizations a plus. Self motivated, goal-oriented with a sense of urgency about HR and proven track record of results.
