Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, School of Nursing & Health Studies - Georgetown University Medical Center

Founded in 1903, the School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS) is a dynamic academic organization dedicated to its mission, “Advancing the health and well-being of individuals and communities.” Academic departments include Advanced Nursing Practice, Health Systems Administration, Human Science, International Health, and Professional Nursing Practice.  The school also houses the Center for Health Equity - Research, Implementation, and Teaching.

NHS features a team of four undergraduate Assistant Deans of Academic Affairs. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, they work closely with dedicated faculty and staff that comprise a dynamic Academic Affairs team which is passionate and committed to facilitating student success in a values-based, rigorous, and interdisciplinary educational environment.  Anchored in the Jesuit value of Cura Personalis, Academic Deans facilitate the holistic learning and growth of their students throughout their time on the Hilltop. 

The Assistant Dean serves as a departmental liaison to one of the School's academic departments: International Health, Health Systems Administration, Human Science, Advanced, Nursing Practice, and Professional Nursing Practice and serves as the academic advising dean to students inside that department at the undergraduate level and, if applicable, in the department's graduate programs.  The Assistant Dean has duties that include but are not limited to:

Academic Advising

  • Serves as primary academic adviser to an identified population of students, which may include both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Connects students to proper resources across campus and within NHS to facilitate their academic and personal growth and development.
  • Maintains accurate student degree progression documents, which including preparation of accurate plans of study and curriculum worksheets that match information found in the graduate and undergraduate bulletins and in the electronic degree audit system. 
  • Maintains accurate student files, including updating information in both the student information system (Banner) and the constituent relationship management system (GU360/SalesForce).
  • Maintains accurate enrollment counts and future enrollment projections.
  • Approves students' registration submissions and develops four-year plans for assigned students.
  • Tracks assigned students' degree progression to ensure timely graduation.
  • Clears students annually for graduation.
  • Connects students to resources on campus related post-graduation employment and graduate degree programs.
  • Maintains data on assigned students, such as graduation rates, transfer rates, and post-Georgetown employment, and graduate school acceptance rates.

New Student Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Leads the reading and review process for a defined population of NHS students.
  • Meets with prospective students and families to field questions about degree programs and academic life on-campus.
  • Responds to phone inquiries and e-mails from prospective students and parents.
  • Attends university and school recruitment activities such as GAAP weekends and accepted student open houses.
  • Assists in planning and participating in new student and family orientation activities.
  • Connects prospective students and families with faculty and other university offices when appropriate.
  • Prepares transfer credit evaluations.
  • Co-teaches a section of HEST 001 First Year Colloquium.

Departmental Liaison

  • Regularly attends departmental meetings and one-on-one meetings with department chair.
  • Advises department and faculty about university policies and procedures, and provides regular updates to faculty about changes in university processes.
  • Provides enrollment numbers and information about student data upon request.
  • Advises department about degree progression feedback from students.
  • Serves on ad hoc department committees and participates in new department initiatives as necessary.  
  • Assists department chair and program coordinator in providing enrollment projections for course scheduling.

NHS Liaison to University Initiatives and Offices

  • Represents NHS on multiple campus wide committee infinitives and/or serves as a liaison to multiple university offices.
  • Provides regular updates to academic affairs teams about programs and initiatives implemented by liaison committees and offices.
  • Assumes leadership role on projects as needed.
  • Regularly partners with and communicates with advising deans from other schools to ensure consistency of academic processes across the university.

Management of NHS Processes

  • Manages multiple internal school processes, such as academic appeals, bulletin & handbook updates, DegreeWorks coordination, publications, webpage enhancements, Colloquium instruction, academic counsel advisement, peer advising coordination, minority health initiative committee advisement, and commencement planning and communication.
  • Sets appropriate timelines and communication plans to ensure successful project completion.
  • Engages in critical evaluation to ensure continual process improvement.

Requirements

  • Master's degree - preferably in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
  • Direct experience advising college students within a higher education setting - preferably 3 years of full time advising experience
  • Familiarity with various data management systems, including Banner, Cognos, and SalesForce CRM
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and efficiently manage multiple assignments
  • Ability to respond to ever-changing environments comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders
