The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking an energetic, dynamic and diligent Environmental Health (EH) professional, with strong customer service skills to serve as our EH Supervisor. The EH Supervisor reports to the EH Manager and provides support and supervision for five (5) staff, including two (2) seasonal pool inspector positions. The position supervises staff covering a number of program areas, including aquatic health, rabies and other vectorborne illnesses, community health assessment and hotels. The position is also responsible for the management and oversight of administrative activities, including supervision of the front desk staff. The successful candidate will have a passion for environmental health, excellent customer service skills and knowledge of community health initiatives. They will also have a strong commitment to their personal and team professional development, as well as ambitions to develop the program into an award winning team.
In addition to supervising the day-to-day activities of their team, the EH Supervisor will also have the opportunity to conduct routine food safety inspections once trained and standardized by the State. Training and certification to become a VDH Standardized Food Safety Environmental Health Specialist must be completed within eighteen months of employment.
This position may be assigned to work over weekends and during the evenings as work requirements demand. The Environmental Health division also operates a rotating emergency duty system, which all team members participate in. Required to maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policy.

Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health (EH) or a related science; equivalent work experience or a combination of work and educational experience. Demonstrable technical knowledge of environmental health practices, including but not limited to bacteriology, basic chemistry and epidemiology. A solid level of experience working in a regulatory environmental health program. Progressive supervisory experience including performance management, training, and recruitment of staff. Experience leading/supervising front desk/reception activities.
Excellent customer service skills. Ability to problem solving using a collaborative approach. Requires highly developed interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written in English. Must be detail-oriented with the ability to prepare documentation and reports of regulatory activities, including documentation required for the time management of team members. Skilled as an educator/trainer teaching environmental health principles. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to provide own transportation for work.
Knowledge and experience working on Community Health Assessment teams from an EH perspective. NEHA Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS); NEHA Certified Professional – Food Safety (CP-FS); Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science in Environmental Health (MSEH) or equivalent combination of education and work experience; multilingual in Spanish; VDH Standardized in Food Safety. Experience using and enforcing the 2013 FDA Food Code. Experience managing diverse teams of professionals.
