Law Fellow -- Clinical
Each clinical fellowship is adapted to the specific needs of the clinic with which it is affiliated. In general, however, all clinical fellows have two major responsibilities: to supervise and educate the J.D. students enrolled in the clinics and to assist the clinics in providing quality legal representation to their clients. The clinic directors, in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Clinics, Centers and Institutes, are responsible for training fellows both as clinical teachers and, particularly with less experienced fellows, advocates in a particular field of law.
Every clinical teaching fellow will report to his or her clinic director. A clinic director may identify responsibilities that are unique to his or her clinic. If no unique responsibilities have been identified, then the following categories apply.
1. Lawyering: Fellows must demonstrate the lawyering skills that the clinic teaches to J.D. students. A fellow must demonstrate a mastery of the discipline that is sufficient for teaching law students.
2. Student Supervision: Fellows must translate their lawyering skills into effective supervision of law students. The fellow
• Conduct supervisory meetings
• Possess knowledge of projects and client needs
• Routinely critique student work
• Evaluate students
• Maintain supervision files
3. Classroom Teaching: Fellows must demonstrate an ability to plan, lead, or participate in clinical seminars, as the program requires. This role includes:
• Application of literature to teaching and skills
• Articulation of goals, methodology and assignments
• Development of participatory teaching methods
• Participation in the seminar discussion
4. Accountability: Fellows must comply with clinic or Georgetown Law policies regarding time keeping, case or project management, non-clinic activities, level of effort, and other matters of accountability.
5. Course Work: Fellows must attend and successfully participate in the required Pedagogy course.
