The George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, has recently added project design and fabrication facilities to meet the needs of its senior design project course as well as the needs of students participating in national design competitions. The department, established in the fall of 2014, seeks an energetic person to oversee day-to-day operation of these state-of-the-art facilities. The lab shop technician must be a safety conscious, committed individual to assume this entry level position. The position is a part-time, hourly, non-student wage position located at the Science Technology Campus in Prince William, Virginia. Responsibilities: Typical job duties include set-up and operation of one or more of the following varieties of machine tools: MIG and TIG welders, lathe, shears, brake press, routers, drill press, and saws. Use a variety of hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Sets-up displays, ability to plan, layout, interpret blueprints, sketches to all engineering specifications; determine sequence of operations, number of required cuts and method of setup. Makes standard shop calculations related to dimensions of work tooling, feeds and speeds. Provide guidance for shop safety.
Required Qualifications: * High School degree or equivalent combination of education and experience * Demonstrated experience working in a shop environment * Mathematical ability to perform and/or understand calculations used in fabrication and ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications and technical data. * Competently use computers and other systems to access, maintain, and manipulate data * An ability to work with teams * Ability to bend and lift in excess of 50 pounds Preferred Qualifications: * Graduation from a two-year technical trade program is preferred * Experience with CAD software and design tools * Experience with 3D printing
