Job Title: PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE - SCHOOLS Closing Date/Time: Thu. 06/28/18 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $61,609.60 - $96,262.40 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: Employees will work on site in Arlington Public Schools, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) Public Health Division is hiring a Registered Nurse to be part of the School Health Bureau. This employee will provide school health services at various sites while traveling within the County to schools, public health clinics, other DHS Units and community buildings to facilitate services, participate in meetings and/or serve on various task forces. The population served is an ethnically and culturally diverse community with approximately 55% Spanish speakers, many of whom Spanish is the primary language and who have limited English skills.

The Public Health Nurse ensures the effective management of school clinics to include overseeing health care and concerns of its school-aged client population, providing clinical guidance to clinic aides, establishing and maintaining effective communication with parents, school and DHS staff, and participating in a continuous quality improvement process.

Specific Duties include:
  • Assessing the health care needs of students to include identifying medically at-risk students and creating care plans for these students while referring children with health problems/needs to care resources as appropriate;
  • Coordinating client care to include providing routine first aid and emergency care to students and maintaining documentation;
  • Providing health education to students, parents, and staff on a variety of family and health related topics;
  • Reviewing students' health documentation to ensure compliance with school entry requirements;
  • Planning and implementing public health priorities to include hearing and vision screenings and immunization clinics; and
  • Collaborating with the Community Health Protection Bureau on health promotion, disease outbreak investigations and case findings.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Nursing plus one year of full-time work experience as a Registered Nurse (RN)* and current CPR (CPR and AED) Certification.
* Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia, or if eligible from another state, the selected candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain Virginia license.

Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related full-time experience on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference maybe given to candidates with additional background and/or experience including:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field;
  • Public health work experience in a school setting;
  • Pediatric nursing experience; and/or
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.

 Special Requirements: Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at multiple locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A background check will be conducted on all candidates who are finalists for the position. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit check and may require signing a release authorizing the County to obtain this information. 

Must complete pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check.
 Additional Information: Work hours and locations:
  • Monday through Friday with core hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.;
  • Tuesday evenings, 2-3 times per month, at Arlington's immunization clinic;
  • This is a year-round position;
  • Primary work location will be at one or more Arlington Public School facilities;
  • Meetings and trainings will be held at the School Health Bureau's main office (2110 Washington Blvd.) or at other locations throughout Arlington County; and
  • Occasional evening hours for other clinics, events, and meetings (locations may be throughout Arlington County).
