Leisure World of Maryland Corporation (LWMC), the property management company for Leisure World of Maryland, a private, age-restricted community comprising 29 housing associations and 8,000 residents located in Montgomery County, Maryland, seeks a full time Accountant responsible for performing accrual accounting procedures for assigned Associations as enumarated in the Accounting Departments Accounting Procedures and Control manual. The scheduled hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES: Compile and analyze financial information to prepare financial statements including monthly and annual accounts by performing such functions including but not limited to: Implementing procedures on delinquent accounts for carrying charges Maintaining general ledger, subsidiary ledgers, and journals by recording key transactions and accruals. Recording of deposits, as required Reviewing of Associations related invoices ensuring that all disbursements are made in accordance with policies and guidelines established by the Associations board of directors. Preparing monthly cash activity statements, delinquency reports, balance sheets, operating statements and investment reports. Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures Ensures all financial reporting deadlines are met. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close processes Follow accounting control procedures Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities by preparing monthly reconciliation on all general ledger accounts Monitor and support taxation requirements Maintain financial databases (Jenark) Prepare for financial audit and coordinate the audit process Oversee accurate and appropriate recording and analysis of revenues and expenses Evaluate and advise on Association operations including revenue and expenditure trends, financial commitments and future revenues Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations and integrity of financial data Reviews Association board minutes and processes required resolutions. Opens investment accounts per Board Association resolution and or policies. Stays current and knowledgeable of interest rates at banks. Assists in the preparations of annual budget spread including: Reserve funding analyses of capital improvement and replacement costs. Carrying of payment schedules and unit listings. Cash management information. Assists auditors in preparation of annual audit report including: Reconciliations Balanced reserve summaries Reserve funding analysis Prepares analysis of various accounts upon request PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS In addition to the Leisure World of Maryland Corporation (LWMC) staff and contract personnel, the Accountant(s) principal working relationships are members of the LWCC Board of Directors (including Board Committee), Mutual Board of Directors, and the community residents. EDUCATION Associates Degree (two years of college or technical school) in accounting, finance, business administration or related field-Preferred. YEARS AND TYPE OF EXPERIENCE Two (2) plus years of experience in the management of financial systems and budgets, financial reporting, financial data analysis, auditing, taxation and providing financial advice KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents; Ability to compile, code, categorize, calculate, tabulate, audit or verify information/data. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interact and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with community residents and outside organizations and agencies at various levels; Ability to resolve problems in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to exercise sound, expert and independent judgement within policy guidelines. Ability to understand and explain economic and accounting information, prepare and manage budgets. Ability to take care of customers' needs while following company procedures Ability to consistently provide high level, accurate in a timely manner Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted and paying attention to the minute details of a project or task Ability to use computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, set up functions, enter data, or process information. Ability to use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices Knowledge of economic principles Knowledge of auditing practices and principles Knowledge of applicable laws, codes and regulations Knowledge and experience with accounting computer applications Working knowledge of Jenark accounting software-Preferred Proficient in Excel and Word.
