Reporting to the Executive Director of Development in University Relations with a dotted line to the Dean of the Merrill College of Journalism, the Assistant Dean for External Relations is the chief fundraiser for the Merrill College of Journalism. Carrying a portfolio of 100+ prospects and current donors, s/he is responsible for securing major and leadership annual gifts to support the Dean’s priorities for the College. S/he develops and implements prospect strategies from identification through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. S/he is responsible for meeting visits and solicitation metrics as well as the annual fiscal year and campaign fundraising goals. This Assistant Dean also coordinates volunteer activities and provides development support and counsel to the Dean of the College and to the academic and volunteer leadership.

The Assistant Dean will have a proven track record as a successful hands-on fundraiser who is skilled at closing gifts and taking the lead in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift level individuals, corporations and foundations. S/he carries its own portfolio of prospects with prospect visit goals of 12-15 per month and 1-3 solicitations per quarter. In addition to work with major prospects, the candidate staffs the Board of Visitors. S/he assists in planning and executing signature College events including the Shirley Povich Sports Symposium, Alumni Homecoming reception and other events as determined by the Dean to maximize strategic engagement for alumni and friends of the College. Working with Annual Giving and the Leadership Annual Giving staff, the Assistant Dean works to build a robust pipeline and Dean’s Fund. It is anticipated this position will also work closely with the Directors of Planned Giving and Corporations and Foundations to secure gifts on behalf of the College.

This position must have the availability and willingness to work evenings, weekends and outside standard business hours. Significant travel is required (60-70% of time with 30-40% out of the immediate area.)


Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree; Advanced degree highly preferred.

A minimum of 7 years of successful development experience with a proven record of working effectively with volunteers and high level donors; building donor relationships; and soliciting and closing five+ figure gifts.

Experience managing/supervisory volunteers and staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be an entrepreneurial and strategic fundraiser.
Ability to identify and build constituencies for support, in setting and achieving individual and group goals, and in planning and executing campaigns. 
Experience with corporate and foundation fundraising.
Knowledgeable about best practices in the advancement field. 
Exceptional verbal, editing management and organization skills. 
Must have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across the university for the enhancement of the donor experience. 
Must have an appreciation for the academic experience and activities of a major research university.
