Senior Information Security Analyst - University Information Services

The Senior Information Security Analyst provides technical expertise and guidance in critical areas of information security engineering, incident management and analysis, including network security, intrusion detection, incident handling, system administration and vulnerability management. S/he is a lead advocate for IT initiatives, which includes transformation of service delivery, optimization of network infrastructure, implementation of a balanced enterprise risk profile approach and efforts to ensure that applications deliver business value. Reporting to the Director of Information Security Operations, the Senior Information Security Analyst has duties that include but are not limited to:

Network Security Engineering

  • Performs Firewall and VPN configuration changes, maintains secure configuration, and leads the troubleshooting effort to resolve the issue.
  • Uses available security tools and processes, audit workstations, servers and network systems to identify security flaws and vulnerabilities in operating system or application software in accordance with established policies regarding periodicity, coordination, notification, etc.
  • Maintains records of audit results, and informs, as appropriate, system administrators, auditors, managers, the security officer, etc., of these results and the positive or negative trends observed.

Incident Management

  • Builds and maintains an infrastructure for intrusion detection and network security management to mitigate threats to university resources.
  • Performs trend analysis on intrusion data.
  • Maintains detailed records of attempted and successful intrusions.
  • Investigates possible security incidents or other violations of the Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Assists and guides systems and network administrators as necessary.
  • Acts as a UIS liaison during investigations that may involve university counsel, law enforcement, and national and international security agencies.

System Administration

Provide assistance with managing university and departmental firewalls and be able to consult on university approved security measures and architectures. Understand the security tools and processes used to manage day-to-day operations within the security office and UIS.

Vulnerability Management

  • Proactively identify vulnerabilities that may be difficult or impossible to detect with traditional network or application vulnerability scanning methods.
  • Follow approved processes to analyze computer systems and networks for potential vulnerabilities that could result from poor or improper system configuration, known and unknown hardware and software flaws, or operational weakness in process or technical countermeasures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with relevant course work in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field(s) - preference for Master's degree
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in the computer field, with experience in computer systems and a broad range of information security knowledge (Master's degree may substitute for experience)
  • Knowledge of audit procedures
  • Supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of budget preparation, oversight, and management
  • Professional security certification
  • Extensive UNIX systems administration skills and a thorough understanding of wired and wireless IP networking
  • In-depth knowledge of operating systems, such as Solaris, HP UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows environments
  • In-depth knowledge of security policies and procedures, and network systems appropriate to large-scale installations in university environments
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and analytical skills
  • Availability and willingness to work and/or supervise work outside the normal business hours of the university
  • Prepared to carry pager, cell phone, or other wireless communications device.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in higher education/university environment
  • Familiarity with Next Gen Firewalls, Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) technologies, log management technologies, and security information and event management (SIEM) technologies
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations
