Multiple positions available in the various Gravity Sewers Branch (GSB) sections: Sewer Maintenance Group (SMG), Pump & Haul, and Pipe & Manhole Repair Sections

Sewer Maintenance Group: MEO positions serve as the primary back-up position to the heavy equipment operator in the absence of the heavy equipment operator, to operate and maintain mechanical truck mounted equipment (e.g. rodder truck or combination vac truck). Under the general supervision of the senior maintenance supervisor, and/or heavy equipment operator, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required in the operation and preventive maintenance of a mechanical truck mounted rodder or combination vac truck (the latter of which is heavy equipment). Performs visual inspections of sewer manholes and lines identifying defects and executing cleaning requirements. Performs inspection and maintenance duties using other equipment to include trailer mounted pumps, camera poles, and crash cushion trailers. In the absence of the heavy equipment operator may supervise subordinate staff performing inspection and/or maintenance functions as required. Uses laptops and asset management system with county GIS to create, edit and complete work orders.

Pipe & Manhole Repair: Operates a variety of medium and light equipment, including a tandem-axle dump truck, single-axle dump truck, backhoe, road roller, skid-steer loader, mini-excavator, compressed air tools, etc., in all phases of wastewater infrastructure and road construction (scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transport, excavations, etc.). Conducts daily inspection, routine maintenance, and light repair on such equipment. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks, such as digging, loading, asphalt leveling and raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and other heavy physical work. Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when operating and working near medium/small equipment. Duties are performed under supervision.

Pump & Haul: Pump & Haul Positions are emergency services personnel and are required to report to work for all sanitary sewer emergencies including holidays, after-hours and weekend work. Positions transport wastewater on state roads and off-road terrains in a 3,000-gallon, or more, tank truck with a gross vehicle weight of 52,000 pounds. Pumps sewage into tank truck at various locations throughout the county and follows prescribed routes to disposal sites in all weather conditions. Maintains vehicle in a clean and safe manner; performs daily maintenance checks and monitors vehicle. Reports major service or repair problems and coordinates with Department 's Vehicle Maintenance Coordinator to resolve the problem. Enters daily record of loads hauled from various sites and miles driven into Asset Management System (EAM). May occasionally work as a member of a maintenance crew cleaning or inspecting sewer lines. Performs pump and haul operations on a rotating schedule.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Responsibilities:
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with Wastewater safety programs and guidelines.
  • Complies with the standards of the county, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services guiding principles.
  • Follows all applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.
Note: Wastewater positions are essential to providing uninterrupted sewer service to county residents, during inclement weather emergencies or other types of operational emergencies. As such, this position may be designated as emergency services personnel for purposes of continuity of operations and may be required to respond during inclement weather or emergency situations. This position is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to work emergency overtime, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents, trainings and exercises." Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" or higher.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of work experience operating a truck and equipment. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee of this position will be required to complete the following to the satisfaction of the hiring department: criminal background check, driving recording check, pre-employment examination and commercial driver's license screening.

NOTE: Is required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without reasonable accommodation. Pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (Including removal and replacement of manhole covers that weigh up to 50 pounds). Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness. Must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders. Entry includes use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Protective equipment specific to confined space work includes hardhat, eye protection, safety toe boots, personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment.
