Head of Security and Safety
The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington, D.C., is seeking an experienced Head of Security and Safety to join our dedicated team in a full time supervisory role. The Head of Security and Safety (HSS) will work closely with the Director of Finance and Administration, Head of Facilities, and others to ensure effective security operations for a priceless collection and a multi-site organization that includes a mix of private and public spaces and has 24/7 security staff. The HSS, who serves as the institution’s lead safety advocate, will coordinate regular security coverage needs, as well as additional coverage for events or other requirements. Additional responsibilities include: hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management of licensed full and part time security personnel; serving as a ‘essential personnel’ in all emergencies and participating in all emergency and disaster response teams; ensuring visitors to the building are greeted in a welcoming manner while maintaining the security of the collection and facilities; conducting regular emergency preparedness drills; overseeing the surveillance system, access control systems, the fire alarm response system; and working with colleagues to ensure that the safety program is properly carried out. This position generally works 8:45am-4:45pm with evenings and weekends as needed. This is a full time salaried position with a generous benefits package.
Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent certification and possess an active D.C. Special Police Officer license. A minimum of 10 years progressively responsible experience in security and safety including a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience is required, with a strong preference for experience in a museum or historic property. Experience conducting, training, drafting and administering institutional policies is required. Experience with building and environmental safety, as well as first aid knowledge, is desired. Proven experience with conducting training, drafting and administering institutional policies, and coordinating with outside agencies such as Capitol Police is needed. Applicants must be proficient in managing fire prevention systems, access control and video surveillance systems, have excellent computer and communication skills, and be able to work collaboratively with others. This position is highly mobile and requires the ability to stand for extended periods, climb stairs regularly, and react quickly as needed.
