Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors degree in one of the engineering disciplines. Minimum of seven (7)  years extensive progressively responsible experience in engineering design or project management work. Experience with transportation engineering and elevator and escalator maintenance is preferred.

Or, Experience in lieu of education will be considered if candidate can effectively demonstrate knowledge of commonly-used standard principles, theories, standards, concepts and techniques within the field of Engineering.

Medical Group:

Ability to complete satisfactorily the medical examination for this class. The Elevator/Escal ator Engineer must be able to perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Job Summary/Duties:

This is professional engineering and inspection work ensuring the integrity and maintenance of elevator and escalator equipment and systems.  The incumbent is responsible for initiating and directing the analysis and development of potential engineering modifications, improvements, corrective action to elevator and escalator systems and for evaluating the maintenance actions of hardware and related technical support systems.

Performs engineering and technical inspections of elevators and escalator equipment and systems to ensure conformity with WMATA's maintenance standards, recommending adjustments to maintenance schedules as necessary to preserve equipment integrity or react to changing operating conditions.

Conducts thorough investigations and inquiries into equipment or system failures, design deficiencies, and problem installations; analyses maintenance and performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement; ensures technical requirements for new and redesigned equipment are properly documented, discussed with  supervisors, and introduced to the maintenance technicians.

Analyzes mechanical systems, electronic circuits, and peripherals used by the WMATA in Elevator and Escalator Systems to determine compatibly of parts procurement, evaluate circuit adaptability to various operating conditions and confirm the suitability of reliability figures; evaluates electronic circuitry and coordinates any required modifications, acting as Branch liaison with contractors, consultants, manufacturers and affected WMATA staff; provides overall direction for periodic field inspections on installed equipment to assure equipment is performing efficiently and to pre-determined specifications.

Evaluates proposed test procedures, maintenance manuals, schedules for new equipment, suggesting improvements in definition to further reliability objectives, and inspection their technical objectives.

Provides effective technical assistance to and coordinates with training personnel on the development of instructional programs to assure the required skills levels are available to maintain elevator and escalator systems.

Prepares timely reports as may be required on general system or equipment problems, budgetary needs, replacement parts procurement difficulties, contractor oversights, and the adequacy of equipment performance standards.

Performs related engineering work as required.
