JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in the following major areas of research: Animal facility maintenance, animal care, and husbandry Animal acquisition Animal study support Maintaining the health of the animal colony Supporting the animal regulatory program Provide support in handling of animals. Provide support in recognizing the appearance of normal animals, discern abnormalities. Maintain a neat and clean microenvironment and macro environment. Have physical strength and dexterity to handle fifty pound bags of feed and bedding, cages, racks, pans, carts, dollies and other equipment. Provide knowledge of detergent-disinfectant usage and operating knowledge of sanitation and sterilization equipment including autoclaves, automated cage washing machines and conveyors, bottle fillers, bedding dump stations, etc. Degree/Education/Certification Requirements: AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification OR become certified within one year of hire and have one year of experience working in a laboratory animal facility performing animal husbandry duties Required Skills and Experience: Must be a US citizen or permanent resident. Must have demonstrated knowledge and skill in handling animals. Must be capable of recognizing the appearance of normal animals, discern abnormalities, and be able to maintain a neat and clean microenvironment and macro environment. Must have the physical strength and dexterity to handle fifty pound bags of feed and bedding, cages, racks, pans, carts, dollies and other equipment. Must have some knowledge of detergent-disinfectant usage and operating knowledge of sanitation and sterilization equipment including autoclaves, automated cage washing machines and conveyors, bottle fillers, bedding dump stations, etc. Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval. Must be willing to be immunized with licensed and FDA approved Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents Must be willing to participate in periodic drug screening. Must have the ability to obtain/maintain certification in Chemical Personnel Reliability Program and/or Biological Personnel Reliability Program. Must have the ability to obtain/maintain CDC Select Agent Program approval. Willingness to work under BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 conditions. Able to wear respiratory protection. Desired Skills and Experience: Experience in specialty areas such as rodent and rabbit facilities, nonhuman primate facilities, barrier, hazard containment and animal facility data management are desirable. Comparative medicine research experience Familiarity with hospital tools such as endoscopy, cardiac telemetry monitors, and Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Single Positron Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Ultrasonography imaging to systematically evaluate the pathogenic processes and clinical course of disease in animal models exposed to microbes. Experience with viral Select Agents is highly desired Good Laboratory Practice experience is preferred. Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Basic understanding of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) Demonstrate interpersonal, oral and written communication, and organizational skills Demonstrate ability to ability to work independently, design experiments, and analyze data
