Montgomery College, Administrative & Fiscal Services located in Rockville, MD, has need for a full-time Accountant II. The normal work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Job Summary: Under general supervision, the incumbent performs professional accounting work, including auditing, analyzing, maintaining, and verifying fiscal records and reports, preparing financial, audit reports, and reconciling general ledger accounts. The purpose of the work is to perform specific tasks such as the checking data, comparing reports to source documents, or authorizations against transactions that may affect accuracy and completeness of ledgers and reports.

This accounting work requires the understanding and application of formal accounting principles and practices to ensure financial record keeping and procedures meet acceptable standards. Assignments usually consist of specific tasks relating to the practical application of theory and basic principles of accounting in the context of the regulations, organization, requirements, automated systems, and other characteristics of a finance/accounting operation.Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Classify, record, and report financial transactions according to General Accepted Accounting Principles, applicable governmental accounting standards, grant award guidelines, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Prepare periodic financial reports for external and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop automated reporting and forecasting tools for data collection, organization, and output of information.
  • Reconcile financial records.
  • Analyze financial results, monitor variances, identify trends, and potential impact, and recommend actions to management.
  • Maintain cash flows to forecast sufficient funding for operational expenses.
  • Monitor bank accounts for unusual transactions.
  • Process bank account balance transfers in supporting operational needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of professional accounting experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) recommendations; of laws and regulations governing accounting procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge of PC hardware and software capabilities and accounting applications.
  • Skill in operating within an integrated application business environment (i.e., all business applications are integrated into one system and requires communication and understanding of all).
  • Skill in using standard office equipment, including computers, computer applications, and software, communicating accounting information, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to maintain a group of accounts, and organize work to set priorities and meet deadlines, communicate and work effectively with others within and outside of the organization, to interpret financial and accounting data, and provide appropriate analysis for management's use in decision making.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
