The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking an energetic, dynamic physician to serve as AHD’s Deputy Director. The Deputy Director reports to the AHD Health Director and his/her responsibilities include providing leadership and management for AHD’s Epidemiology and Population Health Teams; providing expert guidance and assistance to all AHD programs (public health nursing and clinics; environmental health; business administration) and to external organizational and community partners working on public health in Alexandria; and assuming other leadership roles in areas assigned by the Health Director.
The Deputy Director will lead Community Health Assessments (CHAs), Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIPs), community strategic planning, and processes for AHD strategic plans and accreditations. The Deputy Director will provide back-up for AHD’s Medical Director and may provide direct medical care in AHD’s public health clinics via examinations, diagnoses and treatments. The Deputy Director will provide direct leadership to AHD during a vacancy or absence of the Health Director. The incumbent in this position must be able and willing to respond to public health emergencies; must be able and willing to work outside normal business hours as needed; must maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policy.
The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is one of 35 health districts in Virginia. The applicant must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and clinical medicine. Position requires the ability to analyze and interpret data for use in improvement plans, community health assessments, and strategic planning; to handle dynamic, rapidly changing environments, including reprioritizing multiple tasks for self and other in short periods of time as required by the situation; and to lead organizational change in a diverse, high impact organization in various environments including periodic, unpredictable external forces of change. The successful candidate must have demonstrated collaborative leadership skills and the ability to manage conflicts in an effective, constructive manner for positive outcomes.
The incumbent must have the ability to work with a diversity of organizational and community partners; to cultivate community partnerships; and to provide effective leadership in managing stakeholders’ competing priorities and expectations. The successful candidate must have the ability to effectively work independently and as a member of teams; to appropriately work with the media, elected officials and other high-profile individuals; and to effectively communicate with others in a timely manner.
The applicant must have a current physician license in Virginia; have a Medical Degree or Degree of Osteopathy; and must have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED). A valid driver’s license and travel by personal vehicle within Alexandria and northern Virginia is required; occasional distant/ overnight travel may be required. The applicant must be proficient in MS Office Suite and have excellent oral and written communications skills and must demonstrate precise attention to detail.
