$1,128.80 - $1,833.60 Biweekly
Job Type: Part-Time Temporary Location: Multiple Locations, Arlington, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking multiple Sports Sites Program Assistants to supervise the Youth Flag Football Program. These positions are responsible for the performance of program functions and work to create and maintain a positive, engaging, and encouraging environment for boys and girls participating in the program.  Program assistants will be expected to serve as a positive role model, encourage opportunities to learn and have fun, ensure all rules and regulations are adhered to, and protect the safety of all participants and spectators while emphasizing the program ideals of team play, cooperation, and sportsmanship.  The flag football program has an estimated 1,400 participants divided into some 120 teams ranging in ages 6-16. 

Specific Duties Include:
  • Managing and coordinating on-site operations to include monitoring the field/sports site to ensure the safety and supervision of the participants;
  • Directing assigned referees to the correct field locations;
  • Assisting players/parents/coaches/spectators at the facility to find their designated field and start activities with teams;
  • Responding to complaints or concerns from parents about the program and the coaches;
  • Preparing the field/site for games and completing regular playing surface and equipment checks to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations;
  • Organizing and inventorying supplies and equipment while ensuring proper quantities of properly functioning equipment;
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of control, fairness, and consistency in all competitive situations;
  • Resolving all participant conflicts with tact and diplomacy;
  • Completing and submitting proper records as necessary, including reports on game scores and accidents/incidents; and
  • Securing the field/site at the end of the program while ensuring the site is left in good condition (trash is removed, etc.).
The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge with the game of football; with prior experience providing instruction in fundamentals and skill development; the ability to make quick and sound decisions to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
 Selection Criteria: Minimums: A high school diploma or GED and three months of experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring. 

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Customer service experience in sports recreation;
  • Educational background in parks and recreation;
  • Coaching/officiating experience; and
  • COR/AED and First Aid certifications.

 Special Requirements: Must be able to work in the elements such as heat and rain/cold weather conditions.

Physical ability to lift/carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds and repeatedly and quickly traverse the field to monitor play.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: 8 hours a day between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Games are held on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning in September 2018 and ending no later than December 20, 2018; staff must attend all pre-season meetings prior to the start of the program. Games are usually held at one of the Arlington County high school stadiums on their synthetic field. Three games are held concurrently on each field.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
