Job Type: Temporary Location: 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       Note: This is a temporary occasional position with work performed on an as-needed basis, as business necessity requires with no dedicated work schedule or guaranteed weekly hours.

The Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) is looking for an experienced investigator to provide support to the human resources and recruitment team by assisting in the processing of background information submitted by prospective firefighter recruit and non-uniform applicants, and provide support in conducting administrative internal departmental investigations. This employee will assist with the recruitment process of the ACFD recruitment cycle by reviewing and assessing all background information that candidates are required to submit during the hiring process, evaluate them for completeness and accuracy and conduct supporting follow up research and investigations to assist in the evaluation of candidates. 

Specific duties include:
  • Reviewing individual applicant background packets for completeness and accuracy, and flagging submitted information in which additional research and follow up may be necessary;
  • Conducting criminal record checks using background check software and other computer systems to run background checks and other reports, and compare generated data with applicant-provided information;
  • Verifying employment and educational history, which may include contacting previous employers and schools of applicants;
  • Interviewing employers, supervisors, co-workers, relatives, and other contacts to gather information concerning the suitability of an applicant for employment;
  • Advising the ACFD Human Resources recruitment staff of information or issues of concern uncovered during the background investigations and providing feedback regarding those issues when requested;
  • Developing candidate specific background summary reports, maintaining accurate and confidential records of applicants, the background investigations conducted, and conclusions of background investigations; and
  • Conducting administrative internal departmental investigations by developing interview questions and strategy, interviewing witnesses and collecting supporting evidence of potential policy violations and preparing summary reports for the Fire Chief at their request.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration or related field plus one year of experience performing background investigations which includes verifying accuracy of document and questionnaire content as well as contacting employment or personal references or other types of inquiries.

Substitution: Additional related qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:
  • Working for a public safety agency or in a public safety environment;
  • Communicating with outside agencies such as employers and education institutions for the purposes of obtaining information, some which may be confidential, and tracking that information;
  • Researching, analyzing, tracking, and monitoring information and statistics, and preparing reports to help inform the decision making of leadership; and
  • Coordinating an administrative internal investigation, researching relative policy violations and preparing report summaries.

 Special Requirements: Work Hours: This is a temporary occasional position with work performed on an as-needed basis, as business necessity requires with no dedicated work schedule or guaranteed hours.
 Additional Information: This is a temporary occasional position, eligible for only sick leave benefits.
