Job Description: Coordinate and perform inpatient rounds, consults, and discharges;Evaluation and management of patients with cardiovascular disease;Maintain a structural heart clinic which includes screening and evaluating patients with structural heart disease, scheduling patients for pre-op testing/procedure/appointments, and arranging and performing clinic visits as well as participating in maintenance of requirements for appropriate registries;Interpret data from catheterizations, TEE, PFT's, CT scans, carotid PVL, EKG's, laboratory data, and x-rays;Perform pre-operative evaluation for patients requesting non-cardiac surgery;Assist cardiologist with diagnostic cardiac catheterization, right heart catheterization, transesophageal echocardiograms, coronary interventions, transfemoral and alternate access transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR), MitraClip, left atrial appendage closures (WATCHMAN), atrial septal defect closures, complex PCI with or without IMPELLA support (CHIP);
Supervise exercise stress testing and nuclear stress testing;
Gain or maintain appropriate credentials with hospital and state boards for procedures;
Administration of moderate sedation;
Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary care team;
Coordination of care with non-sentara cardiologists, MACTS office, anesthesia, cath lab, and vendors for procedural scheduling;
Gain proficiency and expertise in specialized interpretation of data from multiple imaging modalities, including 3D reconstruction and measurement of CT scans for procedural planning, as well as echo, TEE, cath and ancillary data (PFTs, carotids, panorex, etc);
Prepare standardized patient assessment work-up and procedural plan for MitraClip and TAVR for patients (Formal Clinic);
Attend conferences and meetings annually to maintain state of art knowledge base in field;
Educate team members including nursing staff, medical students, physician assistant students, and advanced practice clinicians
Preceptor of PA students;
Formalized training of new general cardiology APCs as part of comprehensive onboarding process
Special Procedures Performed by the APC
  • Provides supervision of cardiac physiologic testing using exercise or pharmacologic agents
  • Performs non-invasive interrogation and reprogramming of cardiac pacemakers and automatic implantable cardiac defibrillator
  • Performs cardiac pacing for interruption of dysrhythmia
  • Assists the physician with the performance of electrical cardioversion
  • Assists cardiologist with diagnostic cardiac catheterization, right heart catheterizations, both transfemoral and alternate access transcatheter aortic valve replacements, MitraClip, ASD/PFO closures, WATCHMAN, and complex PCI interventions
  • Administration of moderate sedation
  • Inserts Swan-Ganz catheters and performs hemodynamic interpretations - DIRECT
  • Performs intra-arterial hemodynamic monitoring - DIRECT
  • Inserts central venous pressure monitoring lines - DIRECT
  • Inserts temporary transvenous pacing wire - DIRECT
  • Left heart catheterization for hemodynamic assessment - DIRECT
  • Insertion of vascular access closure devices (angioseal, perclose, boomerang, etc.) -DIRECT
  • Assistance with transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) - DIRECT

The hospital-based Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for providing health care services to individuals, families, and/or groups in the hospital setting, independently and/or under the direction of the attending physician. Health care services include conducting comprehensive health assessments, prescribing/providing treatments/interventions, making referrals, managing acute and stable chronic illnesses, promoting health, and providing disease prevention and management services. The PA is expected to participate in quality assurance and improvement activities, engage in member- of- the- team activities, use resources (human and material) appropriately, and adhere to Hospital and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations (as applicable).

Cardiology Experience required (for new grads to be considered)
Experienced NP or PA preferred

License
Required: Basic Life Support, Physician Assistant
