Position Summary

Home visitors play an essential role in working with families to lay a foundation for their child's school readiness. The Home Visitor works in environments where families are most comfortable. This sets the stage for close, trusting relationships. Through these relationships, home visitors establish a partnership with the family by setting goals for their child and themselves. Home visitors support parent-child interactions and offer information and activities that align with the family's goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conducts developmental screenings
  • Continuously assesses child’s progress by collecting, aggregating and analyzing data on an on-going basis
  • Plans and offers productive socialization experiences for children and their families by employing appropriate curricula, schedules, and routines in collaboration with the family
  • Educates families on developmentally-appropriate activities designed to promote school readiness and supports learning through daily routine experiences
  • Supplies and/or suggests materials to enhance the learning activities
  • Builds effective relationships with families
  • Recruits and enrolls families into the program
  • Schedules home visits with families weekly for a minimum of 90 minutes per visit
  • Engages families as full partners in their own and their child’s development and learning by helping families develop achievable short- and long-term goals, engaging them in assessing their needs and strengths, and supporting them in taking actions to reach their goals
  • Supports families in fostering safe, healthy, and nurturing home environments through linking families to resources while being sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs
  • Promotes parents' overall involvement and participation in program governance
  • Promotes family involvement in agency-wide activities (e.g., health fairs, festivals, other activities)
  • Works in collaboration with other program staff and consultants to monitor, track, and coordinate services for children and parents
  • Coordinates with the Health Consultant to ensure that chronic health forms are completed and signed by physicians, medical plans are completed, and necessary follow-ups are conducted for each child in their caseload with a chronic health condition
  • Coordinates with the Health Consultant to ensure that nutrition assessments are conducted for each child and that appropriate follow-up information is provided to families
  • Assists families with attaining and maintaining a medical and dental home.
  • Refers and links children and parents to needed services; ensures that referrals are being followed through by families and documents their efforts to do so
  • Works collaboratively with other agencies to help meet the needs of families in the Early Head Start Program and/or other assigned programs
  • Secures and maintains information on child health (physicals, dental screenings, immunizations, health history), and nutrition data, for each child assigned to their caseload
  • Maintains records and documents services in a timely manner
  • Enters service data into Child Outcomes and Planning Administration (COPA) online data system
  • Participates in staffing of all families with a Mental Health Consultant
  • Attends family support team meetings, staff meetings, staff trainings, collaborations, and planning meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of an Associate’s Degree (or equivalent), with one (1) year of consecutive related experience 
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Strong written, verbal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to coach and mentor adult learners
  • Ability to establish supportive relationships with staff and families from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to utilize reflective supervision
  • Ability to utilize basic office equipment, and learn how to enter data into COPA (online data tracking system)
  • Ability to work within a team environment as a cooperative and supportive team member.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Social Work or Early Childhood Education 
  • Background in early childhood development or social work 
  • Knowledge of curriculum planning and development techniques and skills (Creative Curriculum especially desirable)
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, health and safety standards, and curriculum planning and development.
