The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington, DC, seeks a skilled and experienced HVAC Specialist to join our Facilities team. The Folger properties include residential spaces, office buildings, and a historic building with a complex layout and strict requirements for maintenance of temperature, humidity, and dew point levels at all times. The HVAC Specialist, reporting to the Head of Facilities, will be responsible for the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of all HVAC control systems throughout the facilities.

This individual will operate, monitor, and maintain the climate control system in all Folger properties, in close collaboration with the Head of Facilities and the Lead Engineer. Duties include: monitoring temperature and humidity levels on the control system; ensuring alarm points are appropriate for proper control of the spaces; responding immediately by phone, email, or in person to stabilize the environment in an emergency situation; and coordinating with the facilities team on maintenance, repair, and replacement of HVAC equipment as required. Additional responsibilities include: development of control drawings, sequence of operations, and graphical interfaces for Building Automation Systems; collaboration with Facilities Manager to identify and obtain proposals for service contracts and third-party inspectors; maintenance of all safety standards appropriate to the work being done on HVAC systems, including oversight of assigned contractors to ensure adherence to OSHA requirements; and maintenance of the Building Information Modeling system. This position is considered essential personnel and must be able to respond to emergencies after-hours and on weekends or holidays. Normal working hours are 7:30am-3:30pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours.

Applicants for this role are required to have accredited technical school, military, or college certification in HVAC and operating engineering technologies, with a minimum EPA Universal certification (Section 608). HVAC and Electrical Master’s licenses are highly desired. A minimum of five years’ experience in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and correcting diverse HVAC control issues, in commercial and residential properties is required, with a preference for experience in a historic building and/or experience with a rare material library environment. Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience with Building Automation Systems, additional experience with Building Information Modeling is desired but not required. Additional requirements: working knowledge of OSHA, NEC, NFC, and life safety codes; advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite and Autodesk; ability in reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics, plans and specifications, control drawings, sequence of operations, and graphical interfaces; and current certification (or ability to obtain certification within 6 months) to work in confined spaces, knowledge of lockout/tagout, fall arrest, SDS/hazardous communication, asbestos, and lead identification. This individual must be able to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.

​Physical requirements for this position include the following abilities: to sit, stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, balance, and climb stairs and ladders; to lift, carry, and move heavy equipment up to 75lbs; to tolerate fumes from paint and other solvents; and to tolerate working at heights up to 50ft.
