Financial Aid Counselor, Law Center Administration - Georgetown University Law Center

They come here for our top-ranked clinics. Most of all, they come because this is the place where theory and practice meet. At Georgetown, students learn the law in the place where laws are made.

The Financial Aid Counselor serves as our "face" to the students in his/her capacity as the primary staff resource for the front desk as well as for outreach for students with incomplete items, ensuring that the student body has a positive experience with the administration, and that the administration has the timely delivery of financial resources to help ensure its fiscal success. S/he advises approximately 800 prospective students and 1400 upper-class students, as well as their families, on all aspects of the financial aid process In accordance with Title IV regulations and the Law Center's institutional aid policies. Reporting to the Director, the Financial Aid Counselor has duties that include but are not limited to:


  • Assists students at the walk-up counter for at least a half day, and fields telephone Inquiries throughout the day.
  • Interprets Federal Title IV financial aid regulations and the Law Center's institutional policies regarding financial aid.
  • Assists students in the completion of financial aid application materials.
  • Schedules appointments for staff members with little supervision, referring complex situations (as appropriate) to the Assistant/Associate Directors, Director, or the Assistant Dean.

Data Management

  • Evaluates documents submitted for completeness and performs the data entry of the documents for a specified caseload of students Into the University database (Banner).
  • Identifies and records incomplete documents and follows through with requests for completion through mall or telephone contacts.


  • Opens, routes, and responds to thousands of incoming e-mails annually.
  • Forwards pertinent e-mail to specific staff members and to other departments when necessary, and prioritizes e-mail for Assistant Dean, Director, and Assistant/Associate Directors.

Financial Management

  • Monitors status of outstanding federal direct loan applications.
  • Communicates directly with the students regarding any incomplete statuses affecting the ultimate delivery of funds.

Grant Management

  • Facilitates the flow of the awarding cycle by matching the entered documents to the appropriate student files.
  • Specific to the assigned caseload, assists in initially evaluating grant aid recipients and pulling files for further counselor review; organizing the award letters; collating and matching documents with files; and tracking of award acceptances forfeitures.


  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of administrative experience
  • Excellent computer literacy skills, especially in MS Office Suite - preference for SCT Banner experience/knowledge
  • Experience in student services
  • Ability to work independently while handling multiple responsibilities at once
  • Flexibility while simultaneously keeping abreast of the administrative tasks and assigned objectives
