Who we are?

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. The Department of Library Services is looking for highly motivated individuals for an exciting one-year Management Internship. These positions will offer a career opportunity to a new college graduate or currently enrolled graduate student with little or no previous professional work experience an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunity in an area critical to supporting a local government structure.

What you will do?

Over the course of a year, the Management Intern will work under the supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They will support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Who you are?

A recent (2017 or 2018) college graduate who has earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree OR is currently enrolled in a Master's degree program or will complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before the starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship. In addition, the successful candidate will also meet the following criteria:
  • Willingness to explore and follow best practices;
  • Self-motivated and a desire to excel;
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving abilities;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and/or tasks and easily switch focus as required;
  • Ability to research and understand technical documentation;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills - ability to interact effectively with many levels of staff and to express ideas articulately, verbally, and in writing to a variety of audiences;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and planning skills; and
  • Strong customer service skills.
Positions Available
 Center for Local History:  This Management Intern will be responsible for providing support to local history/archival activities, including reference, education, and outreach, to gain a comprehensive overview of the operation of a local history collection and community archives. Location: Center for Local History at Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington. Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week; schedule may include some Saturdays and one evening per week

Duties may include assisting in the following areas:
  • Administrative support for oral history projects;
  • Content creation for a local history app;
  • Collaborate with team on various digital/physical projects and exhibits;
  • Social media outreach including writing original blog posts; and
  • Customer service at public service desk to answer reference/research questions from patrons.
Community Archives Under the guidance of a professional archivist, this Management Intern will participate in all phases of processing an archival collection, from arrangement and description to creation of a finding aid. Locations: Community Archives, 2422 N. Fillmore St., Arlington, the Dawson-Bailey House, 2133 N. Taft St., Arlington, and Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St Arlington. Work hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week; schedule may include some Saturdays and one evening per week.

Duties may include assisting in the following areas:
  • Research and writing using archival resources;
  • Collaborate with team on special projects, both digital and physical, to promote, educate and provide outreach for the local history collection and archives; and
  • Create interpretive materials to highlight and promote a local historic site.

The ideal candidates for both positions will possess knowledge of metadata creation and digitization best practices awareness of new technology and trends and their application for imaging services; familiarity with both analog and digital format in relation to audio and visual materials; the ability to multi-task and work independently, and strong customer service skills.
 Selection Criteria: We anticipate filling these positions between July 1, 2018 and September 1, 2018. Therefore, applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2018 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field.

Minimum: Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree (minimum GPA of 3.0) within the past year (2017 and/or 2018) in the following area of study, must be currently enrolled in a Master's degree program, or must complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.

Degree Requirements: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in History, Librarianship, Archives Management, Museum Education, Social Science or related discipline.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
  • Experience scanning and working with digital records;
  • Handling and care of primary documents;
  • Developing and maintaining digitization workflows; and/or
  • Siginficant customer service experience.

 Additional Information: Work hours: 40 hours per week.
