Physical Therapy Assistant
Provides therapeutic care that includes planning and implementation of treatment to patients who have been referred by a physician for rehabilitative care. Conducts therapeutic activities. Education: Associates degree and license to practice as a Physical Therapy Assistant in the State of Maryland. Experience: None. Skills: Verbal and written communication. Physical Requirements: Visual acuity; manual dexterity and physical mobility; hear and orally communicate. Heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs). Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients, supplies and equipment, prolonged standing/walking; intermittent exertion when performing treatments. Working Conditions: Possible exposure to chemicals, such as acids/alkalis, solvents, soaps/detergents, and cytotoxic drugs. Exposure to blood and body substance. Flexing to other MedStar programs and/or sites may be required. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Advances professional knowledge to ensure quality patient care and program excellence. Enhances growth and development and enriches personal knowledge and skill through participation in educational programs and affiliations. Arranges schedules for re-evaluations and discharge summaries to be done by the therapist. Completes or works towards completion of annual goal(s). Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Documents and reports patient treatment and progress according to departmental standards. Documentsongoing communication with therapist. Implements treatment plan established by the PT. Seeks guidance for clarification in more complex situations. Involves patient and family as appropriate in treatment and discharge planning through family education and training. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Performs and documents measurements. Performs other duties as assigned. Responds to patient's current physical and emotional status and modifies treatment accordingly in consultation with therapist. Recommends discharge in consult with the evaluating therapist. Selects and safely administers appropriate modalities, and interventions within the limits of a plan of care. Ensures that treatment is appropriate and revised as necessary resulting in optimal patient improvement.
