Performs autopsies and gross dissection of surgical specimens. Prepares frozen section slides duringoperating room consultations. Prepares slides from fine needle aspirate procedures performed by the medical staff. Participates in the formulation of Quality Assurance policies and protocols. EDUCATION: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pathology or MD degree with specialized training in Pathology. EXPERIENCE: Relevant work experience is preferred but not required. LICENSE/CERT/REG: No special certification, registration or license required. SKILLS: Basic computer skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Ascertains the proper legal authorization for autopsies. In cases of question, initiates procedure to obtain proper authorization. Retrieves patient's chart and other pertinent data for review with the pathologist. Notifies attending physician, funeral home, and other authorities prior to beginning the dissection. Assists in the organization and coordination of autopsy and surgical pathology conferences. Assists the pathologist in preparation of the preliminary anatomic diagnosis. Confers with pathologist to identify the special techniques and procedures that will be necessary. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department mplies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Ensures completion of the autopsy protocol, correct coding, and filing of protocols and other material and data associated with the autopsy. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs postmortem prosection including the external examination, in situ organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, and dictation of data. Photographs the body, organs, microscopic slides, and other relative materials. Prepares a clinical summary from the chart for review with the pathologist. Prepares gross description and completes surgical dissection of surgical specimen. Prepares tissues for microscopic examination including frozen sections and permanent sections for light, EM, and immunofluorescence microscopy. Releases the body to the funeral director following proper restoration and indications of any biohazards.
