Lead Echocardiograph Tech
Responsible for the compliance of standards as directed by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) for the performance of echocardiograms. Available to perform inpatient and/or outpatient cardiac ultrasound testing to include 2D/3D echo/Doppler, exercise/Dobutamine stress echo exams and assist with transesophageal echocardiograms and intra-procedural interventional echocardiograms. Assesses the educational needs and competencies of cardiac sonographer staff and develops, schedules, coordinates and conducts educational programming for new and existing staff. Works with the Medical Director, medical staff and technical staff to ensure quality patient care and technical training. Assists in the implementation of protocols and procedures, and participates in ongoing performance improvement programs. Standardizes and updates procedures, quality of images, competency and training of staff and quality assurance for the echo laboratory. Qualifications EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelors degree in Biology or a healthcare related field preferred. EXPERIENCE: 3 years of echocardiography practice experience. Experience with high level clinical competence in all aspects of Transthoracic Echocardiograms (TTE), Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE), and Stress Echocardiograms. Experience in arrhythmia analysis. Experience in the ICAEL accreditation process preferred. LICENSE/CERT/REG: Appropriate credential in echocardiography from the ARDMS, CCI or CARDUP: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) Canadian Association of Registered Diagnostic Ultrasound Professionals (CARDUP). CPR certification. SKILLS: Demonstrates high level of clinical competence. Demonstrates ability to precept. Effective interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication. Good analytical, mathematical, organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to recognize and assist in emergency medical situations. Basic computer skills. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Adheres to department and facility Safety and Infection Control programs. Reports patient or associate safety events as per established protocol. Demonstrates compliance with Universal Precautions when appropriate. Cleans, disinfects and maintains cardiology equipment per department protocol. Adheres to department and hospital Safety and Infection Control programs. Reports patient or associate safety events as per established protocol. Assists with development of new or revised procedures as required by IAC standards. Assists with performance review activities including monitoring competencies for echo sonographers in MedStar Baltimore North facilities as necessary. Assists with the selection of new or replacement echo equipment. Completes all procedures prior to test performance and related clerical procedures. Assists with the planning and timely scheduling of all cardiology tests. Ensures completeness and accuracy of required patient data prior to billing and interpretation. Accurately completes all department and MedStar Health billing requirements in a timely manner. Maintains performance statistics as required. Consistently performs including exercise and Dobutamine stress echo imaging/Doppler as per department protocol. Accurately performs EKG and blood pressure determination during procedure following department protocols. Assists in monitoring patient condition and safety during procedure identifying and documenting cardiac abnormalities related to patient symptoms and/or diagnosis. Immediately notifies the interpreting/performing cardiologist of any serious abnormalities identified during the procedure. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of echocardiography trends and best practices. Maintains data support procedures for IAC lab accreditation. Complies physician and sonographer competency/registry and CME attendance records. Maintains Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits to comply with registry and IAC-Echo accreditation standards. Assists with development of new or revised procedures as required by IAC standards. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement programs including compilation of associated statistics and quality metrics. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate. Participates in the hiring and orientation of new staff echo sonographers. Performs and oversees all activities related to echo laboratory accreditation to ensure compliance to IAC standards by servicing as the echocardiography technical director as needed. Routinely reviews echo sonographer exams as part of a formal quality assurance program. Seeks opportunities to participate in developing/revising Quality Improvement procedures required by MedStar Quality Assurance or IAC standards. Coordinates and attends required peer review and quality improvement meetings.
