Provides education to new Coding employees through an orientation process onsite, remote or a combinationof both, for all MedStar facilities. Provides ongoing education for all MedStar Coding staff on a continualbasis. Coordinates with the Director of Coding Quality and Education to provide consistent education contentfor coding staff and CDI staff. Provides daily management of coding staff that are not meeting qualitystandards to coach and educate. Participates in team management meetings on associate performanceimprovement plans. Qualifications EDUCATION: High School graduation or equivalent. Bachelors degree preferred. Current AHIMA CertifiedCoding Specialist (CCS) certification. EXPERIENCE: 5 years experience in coding to include Coding Management, Coding Auditing, inpatient andoutpatient coding in an acute care setting; experience working with physicians and other clinicalprofessionals; experience in documentation review; coding/DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) analysisrequired. Demonstrates knowledge of coding standards, TJC (The Joint Commission) standards, HIPAA(Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and regulatory requirement. LICENSE/CERT/REG: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) certification from AHIMA (American HealthInformation Management Association). SKILLS: Strong knowledge of MS DRG (Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups), APR DRG (All PatientRefined Diagnosis Related Groups) and outpatient reimbursement methodologies Strong inpatient andoutpatient coding skills. Strong knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology and Disease process. Excellentinterpersonal skills, including verbal and written communications. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Acts as a referential resource for coding and reimbursement guidelines. Analyzes quality trends to determine education opportunities. Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations. Identifies and evaluates innovative educational methodology that may be appropriate for the targeted audience; incorporates new methodology as appropriate to enhance and update the effectiveness of education and skills development programs. Monitors AHA (American Hospital Association) Coding Clinic publications, and prepares education as needed. Monitors OIG (Office Inspector General) plan for potential coding education topics. Participates in CDI (Clinical Documentation Improvement) webinars. Participates in hiring process and selection of coding staff. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned. Primary educator for all system wide coding staff; new employees through the orientation process and ongoing education for current staff. Manages the individual developmental plans for coding staff to help achieve success through the Medstar Coding career ladder. Responsible for providing education to the Coding staff in collaboration with Director, Coding & Education and Director, CDI (Clinical Documentation Improvement) for quarterly conference calls and web based training. Provides coding manager with detailed reports of training progress. Completes a post-training assessment to access the comprehension of training material for each associate , and provides to coding manager. Provides consultation, leadership, and expertise to internal management in the planning, implementation and delivery of coding education. Develops curriculum for Medstar training program and maintains with annual updates. Researches information on coding changes to keep all staff up to date. Responsible for facilitating education opportunities for coding staff. Responsible for evaluating and recommending educational references for Coding staff. Responsible for preparing new staff for AHIMA and/or AAPC coding certifications by providing educational material. When necessary performs inpatient and outpatient quality reviews. Works directly with Coding Director to develop required action plans for coders needing support to maintain Medstar quality standards. Works in regional/system wide teams to develop educational materials and activities.
