DC BAR PRO BONO CENTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR NONPROFIT AND SMALL BUSINESS LEGAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS POSITION DESCRIPTION The DC Bar Pro Bono Center has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director to lead the Nonprofit and Small Business Legal Assistance Programs. The Nonprofit and Small Business Legal Assistance Programs provide legal counsel and support to local nonprofit community-based organizations and disadvantaged small businesses through pro bono legal services, periodic nonprofit and small business clinics and educational programs. This position reports to the Executive Director, DC Bar Pro Bono Center. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Manages the Nonprofit and Small Business Legal Assistance Programs (Programs). 2. Provides day to day leadership, coaching and mentoring to the Programs' team. 3. Develops long-term plans for the Programs, setting priorities, selecting target client organizations, identifying strategic directions for the Programs' activities, and evaluating the Programs' impact. Provides substantive legal advice and guidance to the Programs' staff and volunteers. 4. Oversees all pro bono services, including on-going legal representation by the Programs' staff and volunteer lawyers, and services provided at the Center's nonprofit and small business clinics. 5. Leads outreach to create awareness of the Programs' services. Collaborates with other service providers and elicits requests for assistance from potential client organizations. 6. Builds and oversees intake, screening and case placement process, ensuring compliance with ethical requirements and Pro Bono Center policies. Organizes and oversees case management and quality control systems. 7. Develops programs to educate community-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses about legal issues affecting their organizations. 8. Leads the ongoing cultivation and recruitment of volunteers in collaboration with other Pro Bono Center projects. Assists Executive Director in maintaining relationships with law firms, DC Bar communities, and other volunteer groups. 9. Prepares annual and periodic reports to funders, the Board of Directors, and others, including narrative and statistical summaries. 10. Assists the Executive Director in the management of the Pro Bono Center. ADDITIONAL DUTIES 1. Helps draft and develop proposals and other fundraising and marketing materials. 2. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. JD from an ABA-accredited law school. 2. Active membership in the DC Bar or eligibility to become an active DC Bar member. A successful candidate who is not an active member of the DC Bar must apply for admission to the Bar within two months of beginning employment with the Pro Bono Center. Familiarity with DC law and practice preferred. 3. Relevant supervisory experience in positions of increasing responsibility. Experience in volunteer management highly preferred. 4. Five or more years of practice with an emphasis on transactional practice, such as corporate, tax, real estate, zoning, financing or other business law expertise, with substantial experience in the nonprofit sector as either a corporate or pro bono counsel. 5. Demonstrated success in planning, developing and administering programs. 6. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and communications skills, with the ability to develop solid working relationships with Pro Bono Center leadership, legal service providers, volunteers, the media, staff and consumers of legal services. 7. Ability to represent the Center effectively in public meetings and events. 8. Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
