Research Assistant, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is to a state-of-the-art cancer center housing more than 240,000 square feet of clinic and research space. Lombardi's mission is to provide the most advanced treatments available, to train future cancer specialists, and to cure cancer in its many forms.  Lombardi is one of only 45 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation, and the only one in the Washington metropolitan area.

The Research Assistant, a member of the Oncology Department, performs various laboratory experiments based on the needs of ongoing research projects involving investigation of mechanisms of tumor metastasis, with possible areas of experimentation including standard cell culture, use of organotypic culture systems, analysis with confocal microscopy, use of animal models of metastasis, and standard molecular techniques. Duties include but are not limited to:

Lab Experiments  

  • Uses organotypic culture systems to propagate and evaluate tumor cells.
  • Uses fluorescent and confocal microscopy to collect data from model systems.
  • Uses standard molecular techniques to interrogate intracellular signaling pathways.
  • Maintains lab notebook.
  • Organizes results.

Laboratory Management

  • Creates list of items to be ordered to support lab research each week.
  • Assists in servicing and cleaning equipment as necessary.


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Practical experience using mammalian cell culture models to studying biological processes
