The Office of Strategic Communication and Marketing at Old Dominion University is accepting applications for the Senior Executive Writer and Communications Specialist (full-time, 12 month) position. This position is responsible for communicating the University’s story to students, faculty and the general public through online, social media and traditional University publications. This position will produce daily content for the official ODU news site and the ODU Athletics website including writing and editing press releases and compelling news stories that promote ODU’s strategic initiatives as well as academic and athletic accomplishments. This position will also conduct research to assist the Cabinet and other University officials to prepare for speeches or other public presentations.

Required Education: Master’s degree in journalism, communications, English or related field. Bachelor’s degree in related field with an equivalent combination of experience to a master’s degree may be substituted.

Required Qualifications: Comprehensive related experience working with a major daily newspaper, radio, or TV station. Extensive writing and editing experience. Some experience covering higher education and sports as a reporter. Experience in producing videos and speaking in public. Outstanding writing skills with the demonstrated ability to write powerful human-interest stories related to the backgrounds of students, faculty and staff members. Demonstrated ability to synthesize details about complicated University programs or projects into easily understood stories. Thorough knowledge of English grammar and Associated Press style. Outstanding social media skills, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Excellent computer skills to include Microsoft Word. Excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to be a creative thinker. Demonstrated ability to multitask and deliver projects under deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in covering state and/or local government.
