Scientist/Sr. Scientist, RNA Biology (NCI)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION We are looking for a Scientist or Senior Scientist to provide dedicated bioinformatic support to the newly formed RNA Biology Laboratory in the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute. The RNA Biology Laboratory carries out cutting-edge research into the roles of RNAs and RNA-protein complexes in normal and transformed cells. Areas under study include identifying the results of transcription and processing errors, identifying the direct targets of RNA-binding proteins and elucidating the ways in which DNA and RNA damage, RNA binding proteins and noncoding RNAs affect mammalian, yeast and bacterial transcriptomes. Our ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of both RNA biology and the specialized bioinformatics needed to analyze a wide range of post-transcriptional processing and modification events. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES- In this role, you will have the opportunity and responsibility to provide assistance and to train laboratory personnel in these areas: Analysis of RNA-Seq, HITS-CLIP, PAR-CLIP, iCLIP, Tail-Seq and NET-Seq experiments, including mapping, quality control, trouble-shooting and downstream analyses. Develop and/or adapt scientific software using various programming languages such as Perl, Python, C, and R. Primary sequence alignment, secondary and tertiary structure analyses for RNA experiments. Analyze data generated in the laboratory and obtained from public databases such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Analysis of base modifications and the impact of post-transcriptional processing events on bioinformatics pipelines and analyses. Maintain, develop, and document bioinformatics software and analysis pipelines. Work in a team environment and contribute to publications, presentations, and provide training in RNA bioinformatics analyses. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: This is a dual level requisition. It may be filled at either the Scientist or Sr. Scientist level. For the Scientist level: Possession of a Ph.D. in a science degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation plus 2 years of relevant experience For the Sr. Scientist level: Possession of a Ph.D. in a science degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation plus 5 years of relevant experience Required skills/experience: Familiarity with 2 or more high-throughput technologies and bioinformatic analysis from various types of RNA-sequencing such as HITS-CLIP, PAR-CLIP, iCLIP, Tail-Seq, NET-Seq. Ability to independently learn new technologies in a rapidly evolving environment and teach others within the RNA Biology group. Strong programming skills using various programming languages such as Perl, Python, C, and R. The candidate should also have significant knowledge and experience in RNA Biology, such as primary sequence alignment, secondary and tertiary structure analyses, analysis of base modifications and the ways in which post-transcriptional processing events impact bioinformatic analyses. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance Foreign degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: Expertise and experience in analyzing RNA-Seq and at least 2 or more of the following: HITS-CLIP, PAR-CLIP, iCLIP, Tail-Seq, NET-Seq data; RNA sequence analysis using covariance models Working knowledge of techniques and software used to: Identify the results of transcription and processing errors, Identify the direct targets of RNA-binding proteins, Elucidate the ways in which RNA binding proteins, noncoding RNAs and post-transcriptional modifications affect mammalian, yeast and bacterial transcriptomes. Post Doctoral experience desired. Expected Competencies: Strong communication skills Ability to independently multitask and prioritize workload to meet established goals.
