Job Description: Position Objective: Leads and coordinates the short and long-term operations of designated laboratory functional area. Essential Job Duties: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions * Provides medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information, products, and services by establishing specimen preparation procedures; developing and implementing analytical procedures; evaluating laboratory information; consulting with pathologists; reporting results according to protocols mandated by the hospital. * Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair. Maintains medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Identifies and implements opportunities for cost-savings that do not negatively affect quality or efficiency. * Maintains medical laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational and staffing adjustment. Resolves problems by consulting with pathologists, other laboratory managers, technical specialists, laboratory directors, physician, nurses, and other healthcare professionals; actively participating in committee meetings. * Maintains quality results by actively participating in the laboratory quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records. * Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress. * Maintains laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results. Maintains laboratory staff results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. * Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Prepares physician, nurses, patients, and students by teaching analytical theory, testing methodology, and the role of tested components in human physiology and medical practice. * Espouses the principals of Lean Thinking and creates a work environment that positively promotes continuous process improvement. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Nurtures a positive work environment that promotes collaboration and innovation. * Develops and manages a departmental budget for assigned areas to concur with organizational and departmental goals. Evaluates and establishes cost for individual tests; determines most cost-effective method for performing testing; negotiates with vendors for best pricing. Maintains current knowledge of discipline-specific coding and billing to ensure charges are appropriately created and applied to patient and/or client accounts. * Ensures departmental compliance with applicable regulatory agencies including checklist compliance and staff competency. Maintains a neat and organized workspace that is regulatory inspection-ready at all times. Educational/Experience Requirements: * Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with course work sufficient to meet the requirements of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist, or Specialist or MT (HEW). * Three years of experience working in an acute care facility as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Histotechnologist, or Cytotechnologist. * Preferred Experience: Five years of working in an acute care facility as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist; at least two years of experience leading or supervising staff in the relevant field; and current knowledge and application of Lean Methodology principals. Required License/Certifications: * MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), HTL(ASCP), CT(ASCP), categorical or specialist (ASCP), or MT(HEW). * Preferred License / Certifications: Specialist (ASCP) Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands: There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.
