Special Education teachers are responsible for supervising classroom staff and overseeing a caseload of six to eight students. The current opening for Special Education Teacher is with our Autism Program.

  • Oversee daily operations of classroom staff and students
  • Supervise classroom staff
  • Develop and supervise classroom/student schedules
  • Develop and supervise the implementation of the classroom/student curriculum
  • Provide individual, small, and large group instruction as appropriate and ensure appropriate systems are in place to monitor student progress
  • Administer educational and skills assessments for programming and IEP development
  • Develop each student’s IEP and report quarterly on student progress
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of instructional materials
  • Conduct state mandated student assessments
  • Participate in development, implementation, and documentation of classroom and/or individual behavior management programs
  • Provide initial and on-going staff training as assigned
  • Communicate with parents/guardians

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or Psychology

Certificate and License

  • Maryland Standard Professional Certificate or eligibility for Conditional Certificate

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Experience providing educational services (e.g., development, implementation, and evaluation of Individual Education Programs [IEP], skill assessment, curriculum design, progress monitoring and problem solving) to students with autism spectrum disorder or other special needs
  • School based educational experience (preschool through adult)
  • Vocational experience
  • Knowledge and experience with transition services and adult service providers
  • Understanding of principles and instructional strategies based on ABA
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively train and supervise classroom staff
  • Ability to perform several tasks simultaneously
  • Cooperative participation within an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with colleagues and parents
  • Flexibility with regard to daily routine and responsibilities
  • Support of program philosophy
  • Computer skills related to common office tasks such as email, conducting internet searches, and using MSOffice (e.g., MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint)

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or Psychology
  • Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst/Board Certified Behavior Analyst
  • Knowledge of and experience with assistive technology
