Job Title: YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN (2 VACANCIES) Closing Date/Time: Thu. 06/14/18 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $56,243.20 - $90,001.60 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: Various Arlington locations; see text., Virginia       The Arlington Public Library is seeking two customer service oriented, energetic, enthusiastic, and creative Youth Services Librarians. These positions will be responsible for planning programs for children (from birth to middle school age); their families and caregivers; assisting with the management of a Branch Library; overseeing the youth collection of the location; and fostering partnerships and programs with local schools and child care facilities. These employees must be experienced in creating new services and programs for youth, and providing evidence of proven success in community outreach. 

Specific Duties Include:
  • Coordinating the activities of colleagues, paraprofessional support staff and volunteers, either on a project assignment basis or for program management purposes;
  • Serving as a specialist in youth services, providing expertise to patrons, to other library staff, to children and to adults of diverse backgrounds, some of them with limited English skills;
  • Leading or participating in departmental, county-wide, regional or community committees or task forces that are responsible for identifying issues and developing solutions in areas relevant to the area of specialty;
  • Assisting the Division, Department, or County in assessing and integrating services and developing new or innovative methods of service delivery;
  • Providing reader's advisory, reference and technical assistance to Library patrons and ensuring the proper use and care of materials, equipment and facilities;
  • Responding to all patron inquiries, assessing needs and interests of patrons to determine appropriate resources, recommending materials and research methodologies, conducting computerized information searches, and assisting patrons in finding materials;
  • Coordinating, developing and promoting all youth programs for the branch; planning, preparing, presenting and evaluating library programs for youth to include story times, book talks, special events, and book discussion groups;
  • Monitoring/inspecting selected library materials for replacement/repair/arrangement, to include selection and weeding; and
  • Performing circulation duties such as checking in/out materials; collecting fees and fines for late, damaged or lost library materials; and creating and issuing library cards.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Completion of the requirements for graduation with a Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university plus Up to three years of experience serving in a Librarian role including at least one year in the area of specialty. As this is a broadband class, qualifications may be reduced to hire at the entry (1 year) or journey (2 years) level with a similar reduction in the specialty area.


Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Providing library services and programs to children and teens;
  • Graduate or Undergraduate course work in youth services and literature, education programming techniques, and/or child or adolescent development;
  • Working with youth in a school, library or similar setting;
  • Providing outreach to schools, preschools, child care facilities and/or groups promoting services to youth;
  • Working with limited English speaking youth and their families; and
  • Planning, managing and scheduling the work of others.

 Special Requirements: Must possess valid driver's license. Must be able to push heavy book carts, lift 25 lbs., and stand for extended periods of time.

Note: Salary listed above is for fiscal year 2019, effective July 1, 2018.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Schedule includes some evening and weekend work. Assignments may change over time.

Work Sites: Current vacancies are at the Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Avenue, Arlington and the Glencarlyn Library, 300 Kensington Street, Arlington.
