The George Mason University Laboratory of Biomaterials and Nanomedicine in the Department of Bioengineering at the Institute for Advanced Biomedical Research (IABR), within the Volgenau School of Engineering, seeks a postdoctoral research fellow with a Ph.D. in chemistry and experience in polymers, lipids, chemical conjugation or modification for delivering nucleic acids. The focus of the laboratory is in the development of delivery systems for mRNA therapeutics using polymers, lipids, synthetic chemistry, conjugates and microfluidic systems. The IABR is located on the Science and Technology campus of George Mason University in Manassas Virginia (https://scitechcampus.gmu.edu/) and is part of the greater Washington DC area, with close proximity to several collaborative research facilities. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Masons academic and culturally inclusive environment.

The Department of Bioengineering (http://bioengineering.gmu.edu/) was established in 2010, and has rapidly grown to 16 full-time faculty. The research and educational focus areas are Biomedical Imaging & Devices, Computational Biomedicine, Biomaterials & Nanomedicine and Neuroengineering. Bioengineering faculty research funding exceeds $20 million currently through National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Responsibilities: The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team developing mRNA delivery systems and will be responsible for:

  • Conjugation, synthesis, chemical modification methods and chemical analytics of polymers, lipids, conjugates related to nucleic acid delivery systems.
  • Collaborating with molecular biologists for cell and animal model screening studies and with structural and physical chemists for design, fabrication and characterization of resulting nanovector delivery systems.
  • Manuscript drafting, revisions and publication. Required Qualifications: Candidates must have earned a doctorate in chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field to apply for this position.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience and expertise in areas related to the research activities described above.
