Who we are?

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. The Department of Human Resources is looking for a highly motivated individual for an exciting one-year Management Internship. This position will offer a career opportunity to a new college graduate or currently enrolled graduate student with little or no previous professional work experience an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunity in an area critical to supporting a local government structure.

What you will do?

Over the course of a year, the Management Intern will work under the supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They will support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Who you are?

A recent (2017 or 2018) college graduate who has earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree OR is currently enrolled in a Master's degree program or will complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before the starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship. In addition, the successful candidate will also meet the following criteria:
  • Willingness to explore and follow best practices;
  • Self-motivated and a desire to excel;
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving abilities;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and/or tasks and easily switch focus as required;
  • Ability to research and understand technical documentation;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills - ability to interact effectively with many levels of staff and to express ideas articulately, verbally, and in writing to a variety of audiences;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and planning skills; and
  • Strong customer service skills.
Position Available
 The eLearning Management Intern will be located in the Department of Human Resources and will be responsible for providing support to the Training and Organizational Development team by aiding in the planning, design, and maintenance of online training resources. They will learn to effectively build a variety of training materials, including eLearning courses, job aids, tutorial videos, and other multimedia.  The intern will discover how a Learning Management System (LMS) can be used to drive employee development. They will gain experience in general LMS administration, including online course publishing, end-user technical support, and basic reporting.
 Duties include assisting staff in the following areas:
  • Assessing training needs and using adult learning principles to develop appropriate educational resources;
  • Creating a variety of training materials including eLearning courses, job aids, tutorial videos, and other multimedia;
  • LMS administration including online course publishing, end-user technical support, and LMS reporting;
  • Developing multimedia, testing course functionality, and completing general administrative tasks in the LMS; and
  • Researching, designing, reviewing, testing, and deploying online training resources.

 Selection Criteria: We anticipate filling this position between July 1, 2018 and September 1, 2018. Therefore, applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2018 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field.

Minimum: Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree (minimum GPA of 3.0) within the past year (2017 and/or 2018) in the following area of study, must be currently enrolled in a Master's degree program, or must complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.

Degree Requirements: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Liberal Arts or Business Administration with coursework in eLearning Instructional Design.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
  • Degree or Certificate program in eLearning, instructional design, graphic design, digital communications, education and/or
  • Previous experience or coursework in one or more of the following areas: eLearning instructional design, graphic design, multimedia production, or digital marketing;

 Additional Information: Work hours: 40 hours per week.  A flexible schedule during the core work hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
