  • You may qualify at the GS-13/14, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

    A. To qualify for the (GS-13): You must have 1 year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must be at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Creditable specialized experience includes: Experience studying and working with microbiology and infectious diseases, understand the principles of epidemiological modeling and simulation, familiar with the characteristics of biological warfare agents. Experience with laboratory standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field in microbiology, understanding the majority of the techniques being used for the research in microbiology, molecular biology and immunology. **It is preferred, but not required, that applicants applying at the GS-13 grade level have 2 years of the above listed experience.**

    B. To qualify for the (GS-14): You must have 1 year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must be at the GS-13 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Creditable specialized experience includes: Experience studying and working with microbiology and infectious diseases, understand the principles of epidemiological modeling and simulation, familiar with the characteristics of biological warfare agents. Experience developing and executing laboratory, experimental, and computer simulation efforts in order to develop operational suitable and effective tools for analysis, training and combat support. Experience with laboratory standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field in microbiology, understanding the majority of the techniques being used for the research in microbiology, molecular biology and immunology. Experience leading a group of technical and scientific experts.**It is preferred, but not required, that applicants applying at the GS-14 grade level have 3 years of the above listed experience.**

    C. Microbiologist (0403) series: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent; OR

    D. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in C above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
    • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

      In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 0403 series.
