Program Associate, Georgetown University's Institute for Women, Peace & Security - Walsh School of Foreign Service

Georgetown University's Institute for Women, Peace & Security (GUIWPS) seeks to promote a more stable, peaceful, and just world by focusing on the important role women play in preventing conflict and building peace, growing economies, and addressing global threats like climate change and violent extremism. We engage in rigorous research, host global convenings, advance strategic partnerships, and nurture the next generation of leaders. Housed within the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, the Institute is headed by the former U.S. Ambassador for Global Women's Issues, Melanne Verveer.

The Program Associate manages all GIWPS events and coordinates programming.   S/he also provides support to the Executive Director and assists in managing the daily operations of the Institute. Reporting to the GIWPS Executive Director, the Program Associate has duties that include but are not limited to:

Events Management

  • Conceptualizes and develops event programs, such as conferences, lectures, VIP visits, book talks, recognition ceremonies, receptions, and lunches/dinners, in coordination with the Executive Director and Managing Director.
  • Negotiates contracts with vendors, working with the Assistant Director of Finance and Administration and the SFS BSC to ensure timely submission and approval of contracts.
  • Identifies and reaches out to potential partners.
  • Corresponds with event participants, such as developing program themes, talking points, run of show, and panel questions.
  • Reserves venues.
  • Generates advertisements, invitations, and associated correspondence; creating/updating mailing lists; and drafts media advisories.
  • Manages events from setup to cleanup.
  • Coordinates with student groups, or any other partner organizations involved in the event
  • Coordinates with the University on protocol and security.
  • Arranges visitor transportation and lodging.
  • Coordinates with other departments or external groups for events in which GIWPS is a partner or participant.

Program Administration

  • Works closely with GIWPS staff on developing GIWPS programs, initiatives, and special projects.
  • In collaboration with the Research Partnerships Manager, coordinates the twice annual Bridging Theory and Practice workshop series.
  • Assists with management of GIWPS offices, program space, and equipment.
  • In collaboration with Research Partnerships Manager, manages student engagement, such as  coordinating student meetings, volunteer opportunities, information sessions, student outreach and the Georgetown Women in International Affairs (GWIA) organization.

Special Assistant to the Executive Director

  • Drafts correspondence, talking points, and short research inquiries for the Executive Director
  • Provides scheduling and administrative support to the Executive Director.
  • Serves as first point of contact for GIWPS inquiries and visitors, such as maintaining organizational email account and answering main phone line.
  • Attends meetings and events on behalf of GIWPS and provides summary notes.
  • Prioritizes incoming meeting requests, messages, and documents for review.


  • Bachelor's degree in international affairs or related field
  • 2 to 3 years of experience in coordinating events and providing program and administrative support
  • Excellent event and program management skills, interpersonal and written communication skills, and a strong orientation to detail and deadlines
  • Familiarity with and interest in international issues related to security, human rights, and global human development
