The American Chemical Society is looking to fill the Manager of Journal & Product Support to join the Editorial Services team within ACS Publications. The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific membership association and one of the top ten science publishers in the world. The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society provides to its members and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of high quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. The Division publishes a weekly magazine, over 50 high-quality scholarly journals focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics, and peer-reviewed books developed from ACS symposia (ACS Symposium Series). The Global Journals Development department is responsible ensuring that the division's journals are the best possible, serving the needs of the global chemistry community. The Editorial Services team within Global Journals Development houses three main sub-teams: Products & Analytics, Peer Review Services, and Journal & Product Support. The Journal & Product Support team is focused on providing support to the journals portfolio in the following areas: Editorial Support Vendor Management Editorial Development Support Publications Ethics Publisher-level Cloud Administration Chinese Author & Reviewer Outreach Position Summary The Manager of Journal & Product Support will oversee the activities of several distinct units as follows: Editorial Support Vendor Management: Working with a team of Peer Review Analysts, oversee the vendor relationships and associated contracts in support of ACS journal editorial offices. This unit provides editorial support to 400+ editors through a network of vendors. The Manager will establish strong relationships with vendor principles, monitor contract and budget activity, and identify opportunities for greater cost and operational efficiency. Editorial Development Support: Working with a team of Development Editors, provides solutions for our colleagues and journals in support of outreach activities, Editor and Advisory Board candidate research, and journal-specific social media activities. Additional administrative tasks assigned to Development Editors include (but are not limited to) preparation for journal board meetings, writing and proofreading meeting and presentation materials, and editor search committee support. Ethics in Peer Review and Publication: Working with the Managing Editor of Publications Ethics, provide guidance and feedback on the centralized effort to investigate and address ethical issues that arise within ACS journals. Publisher-level Cloud Administration Working with the Senior Peer Review Analyst, oversee our publisher-level Cloud Administration activities, including persistent identifier curation, author account validation, and other cross-portfolio administrative tasks performed by Cloud Admin vendors in support of Publications initiatives. This team also oversees support of ChemRxiv. Chinese Author & Reviewer Outreach: Working with the Manager of Peer Review Operations, located in China, provide guidance and feedback on Author and Reviewer outreach activities. Serve as a senior staff liaison between field staff and business units across ACS Publications to ensure outreach activities are aligned with key strategic initiatives. The qualified candidate should be comfortable managing a diverse team of publishing professionals, covering broad operational areas in support of our journals program. The ability to communicate clearly with a variety of contacts is essential. The individual must be a self-starter, able to successfully multitask and manage teams around deadlines. The Manager should have a strong background in STM publishing, with a working understanding of the peer-review process and the pressures faced by the publishing industry writ large. Position Accountabilities Manages our portfolio of editorial support vendor contracts (aka ACS Managed Support), including building relationships with vendor principles, monitoring contract balances and invoice processing, and participation in negotiations and contract renewal efforts. Evaluates existing support processes and cost structures, with an eye for opportunities for improvement. Manages an operational budget with dimensions of $10-15M annually. Leads efforts to expand editorial support operations internationally. Manages Development Editors and their work in support of Editorial Development. Establishes and reports on KPI's associated with Development Editor tasks. Maintain awareness of journal meeting schedules and other ACS Publications events, organizing Development Editor resources around the timing and demand of those meetings. Manages the ACS Publications Ethics office, serving as a senior point of contact for business units across ACS Publications. Working with staff, will develop documentation, arrange training events for staff and editors, and work to resolve ethical issues as they arise within our journals Oversees publisher-wide Cloud Administration activities. Develops and reports on KPI's associated with persistent identifier collection and curation efforts, participates in cross-functional metadata collection teams and advises on resource- and process-effective vendor solutions to support ACS Publications' data needs. Manages Author & Reviewer outreach efforts in China, including the supervision of our field employees. Required Skills Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in business management, communications, or related field. Degrees in the sciences also considered. 8+ years of relevant STM Publishing experience and 4+ years management experience required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both technical and nontechnical audiences, decision making, leadership, and analytical skills required. This position is based in the Washington, DC offices of the American Chemical Society. Travel necessary (6-8 times per year).
