Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Software Engineer for rapid-fielded systems in the areas of Unmanned Systems and Sensing. Job Summary: Design and develop software and algorithms used with electronic sensors and hardware to collect, process, and communicate data to support the operation of unmanned vehicles, sensor systems and autonomous systems. Duties: * Develop software to communicate with sensor systems and other hardware via computer interfaces to collect, process, distribute and visualize data in real time, utilizing C/C and Java on Windows, Linux and embedded systems. (50%) * Develop algorithms for processing sensor data (ie EO/IR, LIDAR, GPS, inertial, etc.) for intelligent control of hardware systems including unmanned vehicles, sensor systems, and autonomous systems. (20)% * Support field testing at offsite test facilities. Assist with test planning, data collection and analysis during test execution. Collect feedback from end users and adapt in real-time. (20%) * Participate in conceptual design and definition of requirements and capabilities for new projects. Document efforts and results, prepare technical reports, present results, and demonstrate system capabilities to peer review groups, partners, working groups, and sponsors. Required Qualifications: BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical discipline with 3 to 10 years of relevant experience in software engineering. Experience in software development of algorithms, computer networking, hardware interface protocols, and user interfaces in a Linux or Windows environment. Experience in Java and C/C , programming languages. Knowledge of tools and techniques for documentation and management of software development efforts. Team player with excellent written and oral skills. Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and to efficiently balance multiple simultaneous projects with disparate timelines. Ability to obtain associated level of necessary clearance to perform essential functions of the job. Desired Qualifications: MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other applicable Engineering discipline. Desirable software experience also includes web application technologies (ie JSP, ASP, JavaScript, HTML). Experience with embedded software development. Experience with algorithms and software development for processing of imagery or video. Experience in autonomous systems, robotics algorithms, or 3D visualization. Experience with full lifecycle software development from concept development through support and troubleshooting delivered systems. Project management experience relating to software or hardware systems development. Special Working Conditions: Travel often to support field tests. Security: Top Secret Clearance is required to perform essential functions of the job. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to classified information. Preference for current SSBI.
