STAFF ACCOUNTANT WASHINGTON, DC ABOUT KIND Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States. POSITION DESCRIPTION KIND seeks a Staff Accountant based in its Headquarters office in Washington, DC to assist the Vice President for Finance and Administration with the accounting and financial operations of the organization. EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS A minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit bookkeeping or similar experience, including expertise in QuickBooks Pro Desktop, MS Excel, MS Word and online payroll software such as Paylocity. Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles related to nonprofit organizations required. Bachelors degree in accounting or finance required, Masters degree preferred. REQUIRED SKILLS Position requires a thorough understanding of accounting and a highly organized, forward thinking individual who is self-motivated and able to take initiative with sound judgment. Individual must have the ability to perform responsibilities in a professional manner and to handle assignments with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality. Proven organizational skills including excellent time-management and ability to prioritize tasks required. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and work independently as well as a member of a team. SALARY RANGE Commensurate with education & experience. REPORTS TO Vice President for Finance and Administration SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES None PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES * Accounts receivable and accounts payable; * Payroll entry and management; * Accounting software entries; * Bank reconciliations; * Journal entries; * Preparing end of month financials; and * Compiling audit and 990 schedules. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is generally performed within the office environment TRAVEL This position does not require travel.
