The Director of Wellness oversees the personal care department with the goal of providing a safe, homelike environment where residents can achieve and maintain their fullest level of wellness and function. Utilizes sound management principles to maintain a motivated and stable staff. Manages resident health and wellness through regular resident monitoring and communication to the resident care team. Routine Functions of the Position: Establishes and maintains positive, respectful, and supportive environment for all residents, co-workers, families, and facility guests. Assures orientation and welcoming process occurs for all new residents and co-workers. Manages the licensed nursing staff. Interviews, hires, orients, coaches, counsels, and evaluates nurses. Supports professional growth of co-workers. Assures co-worker hepatitis immunization and series tracking is complete. Oversees the PCA and nursing career paths and mentoring program. Reviews and countersigns PCA performance evaluations as appropriate. Ensures adequate personal care staffing based upon state regulations, annual budgets, and team targets. Works with Pathways and Connections program managers to coordinate appropriate facility-wide PCA staffing levels that meet program and clinical needs. Encourages teamwork, promotes wellness philosophy, and supports open communication and collaborative problem solving among co-workers. Leads by example. Works in partnership with the executive director, marketer, program manager and wellness team to assess residents' needs and to place them appropriately within the continuum of care. o Performs assessment evaluation for prospective residents. Ensures a head-to-toe physical review is completed for all newly admitted or returning residents and reviews the physical review results. Leads the wellness team in the continual review of residents and the creation of appropriate support plans based on changes in resident care levels. Completes DPW required assessments for assigned residents. Reviews all DPW required assessments for appropriateness Encourages resident and family participation in service planning to promote and preserve personal choice, independence and dignity. As appropriate for resident confidentiality, keeps family informed of resident's progress. Assures customer support plan is available to appropriate co-workers and residents receive the services specified in their plans. Coordinates health services with residents, physicians, therapy departments, pharmacy and other referral agencies to assure optimal care. All communications meet state and federal guidelines for confidentiality and resident rights. Responds to long-term care insurance company questions on behalf of residents. Collaborates with dining services using the Dining Communication form to ensure a beneficial dining experience for each resident. Collaborates with Community Life, Fitness, Chaplain and Therapy department to promote optimal resident mobility, cognition and satisfying social interactions. Actively protects resident and co-worker safety by recognizing, reporting and taking immediate action to minimize risk of accident or injury. o Appropriately handles on-the-job injuries reported by co-workers. Responds to resident emergencies and reacts appropriately. Monitor DPW and internal incident reports, including medication errors, and implements action plans to decrease incident occurrence. Assures completion of the OSHA Sharps log and other safety related reports. Assures all infection control guidelines are met and appropriate tracking and surveillance procedures are followed. Coordinates and participates in initial and ongoing education of all nurses and personal care co-workers regarding resident health and wellness. Ensures co-worker attendance at mandatory sessions. Makes twice daily rounds throughout facility to stay abreast of resident care needs and issues. Observes for any signs of resident abuse or neglect. Takes immediate action to prevent harm and report incidents according to Company policy and state laws. Conducts monthly staff meetings with nurses and medication associates. Participates in facility meetings: wellness, marketing, therapy, fireside chats and others as appropriate. Effectively communicates new policies / procedures and Company initiatives. Ensures adequate supplies are maintained and ordered accordingly. Assumes responsibilities of the executive director and / or associate executive director in their absence and takes initiative to maintain the smooth operation of the facility, reporting to the vice president of operations. Responsible for compliance with company policies and procedures, pharmacy policies and procedures, and state and federal agency rules and regulations. Assumes ultimate responsibility to ensure proper medication associate training and monitoring. Maintains current knowledge of QuickMAR functions. Serves as a QuickMAR resource to medication associates and nurses. Performs MAR reviews per protocol (or assigns to designee and ensures completion). Expands personal development in gerontologic clinical nursing, leadership skills, communication skills, management skills and maintains current knowledge of regulations or regulatory issues. Annually achieves 6 CEUs in topics directly related to the care of the older adults / gerontology. Performs general nursing duties as necessary. Ability to multitask. Must be dependable, punctual, self-motivated, and able to work without constant supervision. In case of fire or other internal disaster, assists in evacuating residents to exits. Protects resident rights and confidential information according to state and federal laws. Observe for any signs of resident abuse or neglect. Takes immediate action to prevent harm and report incidents according to company policy and state law. Critical Success Factors: Compassionate and empathetic in personal interactions. Work Environment: Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods of time Ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel, bend, reach, stretch, carry up to 15 pounds and support up to 70 pounds. Push / pull up to 100 pounds. Secure proper assistance for transferring and lifting resident as needed. Workplace includes the entire campus except the attic. Minimum Qualifications: Current unencumbered LPN or RN license in the state where employed. Minimum of one year experience in assisted living or health care. Prior supervisory experience in the health care environment strongly preferred. CPR certified.
