    Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual. Applicants must possess:
    • A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable). OR
    • Successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable). OR
    • Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
    GS-09: In addition, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector OR possess master's or equivalent graduate degree, or completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting studies, analyzing findings, and preparing various reports; identify environmental conditions involving a variety of hazards, e.g., chemical, noise, heat, actinic rays, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and other environmental physical agents in industrial shops, production areas, laboratories, confined areas, and outdoor work sites.

    GS-11: In addition, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector OR possess a P.h.D. or equivalent degree, or completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting industrial hygiene inspections of workplace environments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers, and to detect violations of published health standards; performing portions of complex inspections under direct supervision and direction of a higher-grade industrial hygienist; or, performing inspections independently where work processes are of limited size and complexity; conducting literature searches related to a specific hazard; calibrating and using industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as personal sampling pumps, sound level meters, noise dosimeters, photoionization detectors, and other direct reading instruments to evaluate environmental stressors; and, providing written recommendations to eliminate or reduce chemical and physical stressors within work environments.

    COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management.
