Engineering Technician II (maybe underfilled)
Evaluates complex applications/plans for building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing disciplines. Analyzes proposed projects by reviewing complex plans, detailed engineering and additional documentation submitted to support the application. Identifies the codes, ordinances, regulations, and policies applicable to the project. Determines adequacy of submission, required reviews, sequence of reviews, and required approvals for proposed project, fees due, and eligibility of the applicant to conduct the necessary transactions required during the plan review process. Provides assistance to and answers complex questions from constituents that call the BPR&I information line and have questions regarding Fairfax County publications and forms, and/or walk-in to the BPR&I Information Counter requesting assistance. Explains complex construction regulations to developers, contractors, citizens and other Fairfax County agencies and advises applicants on code and permit submission requirements. Through the use of a PC, provides responses to plan status inquiries received from staff and the public. Reviews work processes and provide input, guidance and training when required. Reviews certifications for single family detached and townhouse roof and floor truss drawings and other similar projects, including residential mechanical heat loss and heat gain certifications. Processes Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Under the supervision of the Code Specialist II, Building Plan Review and Inspections Division (BPR&I), LDS.
Position may be underfilled as an Engineering Technician I; the underfill requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; and three years of paraprofessional engineering support work as defined by the area to which assigned.
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Engineering Technician I (Grade S16, $39,325 - $65,542). The employment standards for the Engineering Technician I are: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education; plus one year of paraprofessional engineering support work, as defined by the area to which assigned. Upon completion of an underfill agreement (which will require that the employee meet the employment standards stated above in addition to obtaining competencies defined by the hiring agency) the employee will be elevated to the level of Engineering Technician II.
Proficient in Microsoft Office. Excellent customer service skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of the permitting process including vertical transportation equipment. Experience with Fairfax County Building Code and Building Plan Review processes.
CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES:
With or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to stand, bend, squat and twist upper body up to an hour; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Visual acuity to read data and construction documents on computer monitors. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds such as boxes of files and large construction plan sets.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
