Smithsonian Enterprises, a division of the Smithsonian Institution, is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant for our Media Group to join the Finance and Accounting team in our Herndon, Virginia office. Reporting to the Accounting Manager or Controller, the Senior Accountant will provide accounting and financial services to support Smithsonian Enterprises’ Business Units with a concentration on our Media businesses, which includes Smithsonian magazines, Book Publishing, Digital Studio and the Web Group. They will be responsible for the maintenance of accounting records, preparation, analysis and interpretation of financial statements and contracts, and modification of accounting principles and procedures for the respective divisions.
Senior Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Account analysis and reconciliation
- Review general ledger account and prepare correcting journal entries
- Post accruals (monthly, quarterly, annually)
- Balance Sheet account maintenance and reconciliation
- Suggest and implement improvements and efficiencies to current accounting systems & internal control procedures
- Prepare financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annually)
- Serve as liaison for Lawson GL entry, research and reporting
Candidates must possess a Bachelors Degree in accounting/finance or related discipline, and 4 to 6 years related experience and training. Requires professional knowledge and application of accounting principles and procedures. Experience in the Media/Publishing Industry preferred.
Must have demonstrated experience in account analysis and reconciliation, including bank statements and inter/intra company general ledger accounts, annual accrual, & internal control procedures.
Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required. Experience with Lawson Financial system preferred.
We seek an experienced and analytical Accounting Professional, with meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skill, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships through effective communication.
We are offering an annual salary of $60,000-$82,000 Commensurate with experience and promotion potential.
